Hi there,
Just wanted some advice on fixing this burn on benchtop. A tea towel caught on fire near stove and melted the benchtop. I'll probably have to get a professional but was wanting advice as trying to save money on the fix.
Thanks in advance.
Hello @Brendo74
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your benchtop
I'm sorry to hear that your tea towel caught on fire and caused the subsequent damage. If you are not yet ready to have your benchtop professionally fixed, I propose using https://www.bunnings.com.au/turbo-175ml-builder-s-bog_p1670144 to patch the damage. I then suggest painting the surface patch in a similar shade as the benchtop. If you have the artistic skill, you could even mimic the finish of the benchtop.
The basic steps are to wash the damaged section and remove as much of the oil and grease that has saturated the surface. It's important to remove all of the oil, food and grease on the timber surface, otherwise the bog will not bind to the timber surface. If you have a wet and dry vacuum that would be handy to use on the damaged surface. Apply the bog up to the surface of the benchtop and do not over fill it. Your goal is to have a flat surface so that you won't have to sand off a great deal of the bog. Once the bog cures sand the surface flat, remove the sanding dust and paint the surface. It will be necessary to touch up the painted section from time to time as it will fade away. Please keep in mind that this type of repair is temporary and will need to be professionally fixed or replaced in the future. In regard to the professional repair, I suggest comparing the repair price versus the replacement price of the benchtop. If the price of the new benchtop is not too far from the repair price it might be worth just replacing it.

Hi Eric,
Thanks so much for your quick and detailed reply.
Appreciate your thoughtful and understanding reply too.
It is a rented property and the owner knows about it, but I thought it was time to get it repaired. I just wasn't sure of how pricey it might be.
I will definitely have to have it repaired or replaced, so I'll look into it.
Thanks so much for your help.
