Hi, I am trying to treat and paint my rusted downpipes.
I have bought
https://www.bunnings.com.au/bondall-250ml-ranex-rustbuster-rust-converter_p1560855
with the hope of using these two products to paint over them
https://www.bunnings.com.au/dulux-4l-1step-prep-primer-sealer-undercoat_p1370234
https://www.bunnings.com.au/dulux-4l-vivid-white-low-sheen-weathershield-exterior-paint-4l_p0144763
As the rust converter works differently, can you advise whether it is compatible with the primer and paint, please?
Hi @xiaoci2008,
The products you've mentioned would work fine together. However, when you're painting metal, particularly something like a galvanised steel downpipe, there are primers and paints specifically designed for metal that I would favour for better adhesion and long-term durability.
I'd start by removing any loose or flaky rust with a wire brush and sandpaper, then apply your rust converter to any firmly adhered rust that remains.
I'd then use something like White Knight Rust Guard SLS Etch Primer. An etch primer is specifically designed to provide good adhesion to difficult metal surfaces such as galvanised steel, making it a better choice here than a general-purpose primer.
You can then finish with a suitable exterior metal paint such as White Knight Rust Guard, which will give you a coating system specifically designed for protecting metal exposed to the weather.
Ultimately, the products you've mentioned would work together in this situation, but longer term, metal specific products would offer better longevity.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
Jacob
I will take your advice on board, thanks, Jocob!
Also, do you mind advising on the appropriate mask to wear?
Hello @xiaoci2008
I recommend using the https://www.bunnings.com.au/bear-disposable-paint-mask-with-active-carbon-filter-and-valve-2-pack_p1210577 . It has elastic head straps, adjustable nose clip and soft foam nose piece for comfortable custom fitting, the P2 painters carbon dust mask for paint fumes is designed for use with paint, dust, sanding or plaster. Certified to AS/NZS 1716:2012 standards, these dust masks have a valve to prevent fogging. The active carbon filter reduces odours and protects against nuisance, organic vapour and acid gas, below the occupational exposure limit.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Do you mind advising on the specific product relating to the White Knight Rust Guard?
Thank you!
White Knight Rust Guard is a paint system made up of four steps, which you'll see listed on the labels of the products: Clean, Treat, Prime and Topcoat.
I can understand the confusion when looking at all the different products listed on the website. There are so many options because the topcoats come in different finishes, such as gloss, semi-gloss and satin, as well as different tint bases that allow them to be mixed into a variety of colours.
Essentially, these are all variations of the same topcoat range, so you don't need to worry about choosing between dozens of completely different products. You just need to select a topcoat that's compatible with your primer, in your preferred sheen and colour.
I'd recommend heading into your local Bunnings store and having a chat with one of our Paint Experts. They can help you select the right topcoat, explain the different finishes and tint it to your preferred colour.
