How to clean and refinish a Pine timber step?

This is a single step in pine that is undercover and not exposed to the elements. It has darkened from foot traffic. What’s the best way to clean it as I would like to use some clear finish on it and keep it natural. What would be the recommend finish for it? Thanks for your advice.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.

As your step is made from pine decking boards, I'd clean and prepare it in much the same way as you would a timber deck.

Start by giving the boards a good scrub with a deck cleaner such as https://www.bunnings.com.au/cabot-s-1l-deck-clean-1l_p1521451 and a stiff-bristled brush like this https://www.bunnings.com.au/oates-long-handle-deck-scrub-brush_p4460246 , then rinse thoroughly and allow the timber to dry completely. Once dry, I'd give the boards a thorough sand to remove the weathered surface, smooth out any raised fibres and provide a clean, consistent surface for the new coating. Something around 120-grit would be suitable for this and a random orbital sander will help to speed up the process. Once you're done sanding, brush away any sawdust from the surface.

I'd then apply a suitable exterior decking oil, such as Cabot's Aquadeck. A decking oil is designed for exterior horizontal timber surfaces and will help protect the pine from moisture and weathering. Follow the manufacturer's directions regarding preparation, number of coats and drying times.
