How to choose a drill?

Hello Members,

I'm looking for a good hand drill machine. I'm looking for long lasting drill bits as I'm not interested to grind and use it.

1. Can you please propose good hand drill machine @ bunnings.

2. Drill bits used for the purpose of for hanging photo frames, mirrors, small carpentery work, drilling tiles etc.

The drill machine shall cater for drill bits that drills multiple materials (Bricks, plasters, tiles, wood etc.) as on long term I would like to use that for DIY Projects.

Are One time use and throw drill bits available that is cost-effective ?

The unit I would recommend is the Ryobi 18V ONE+ 4.0Ah Hammer Drill Kit. It's perfect for D.I.Y. jobs around the house, has a hammer function for drilling bricks, comes with a decent-sized 4.0Ah battery and is a great price.

For drill bits, I would recommend getting a couple of kits to cover the majority of what you need. The two kits would be the RYOBI 56 Piece Impact Drilling And Driving Set and a Sutton Tools 6 Piece Masonry Drill Bit Set. If you need larger sized drill bits for a project I would advise buying those individually. The same goes for tiles, if you need a specific size I would purchase the individual drill bit you need. The drill bits included in these kits are of good quality and should last a long time without the need for sharpening.

The Craftright range of drill bits is very inexpensive and could almost be deemed throw away at that price point. They will do the job you need them to but will not last anywhere near as long as the kits mentioned above. It would be my advice to purchase something of good quality that will be used for years to come.

Hi can I get some updated advice on what drill I should be looking at buying ? I’m a novice … never drilled in my life … no idea what drill bits I would need for any job ?
I am a diy Reno but would like to have one that can go into walks bricks etc but nothing stronger !
how do I know what size drill bit I need for each job as I am atm doing cabinet handles ?

I'd highly recommend this Ryobi 18V ONE+ 1.5Ah/5.0Ah Hammer Drill Kit. It has the functionality of drilling into brick walls and is a fantastic machine overall. Since you're starting out, you might like to invest in a couple of drill sets and then buy any additional bits you need separately. Here's the Craftright 13 Piece HSS Drill Bit Set, suitable for steel and wood, and the Craftright 15 Piece Masonry Drill Bit Set, suitable for bricks.

Each job you do will likely call for different sized drillbits. Are you fixing the new handles onto the cabinet and need to drill holes for the handle screws? Typically the handle screw is around 4mm, so a 5mm drill bit would suit. Alternatively, if you can post a picture of your handles we can try our best to work out a suitable sized drill bit.

I would like my own basic drill I can use around the house for general repairs and building flat pack furniture. I think the Ozito PXC 18v Compact Drill Driver would be a good one for what I’m after but I’m not sure which ‘bits’ to purchase to go with it. Is there a basic kit that you could recommend please? After screwdriver heads and some drill bits. Thank you.

This Ryobi 40 Piece Specialty Metric Drill And Drive Set is a great kit that comes at a reasonable price.

It contains a variety of driver bits, which will be the main thing you need for repairs and flat-pack furniture. They are what you'll use to drive in and remove screws

It also contains a few different-sized drill bits in case you ever need to put a pilot hole in some timber, or you'd like to give some custom woodworking a try.

Good morning! I would like a recommendation on whether I should buy a regular drill or a hammer drill. I am between the Ryobi 18V One+ driver drill and their hammer drill.
It would be used to drive screws mainly on wood and potentially drilling hardwood. It’s a gift for someone who doesn’t own one so I am thinking if it would be better to have the hammer drill for some potential wall drilling or harder drilling projects in the future.

Is there any reason I should choose a regular drill instead of the hammer one? As the hammer can be used as a standard drill I couldn’t think why not get that one but I would like some advice on it.

Ok so most people don't realise that most battery (and a lot of corded) drills can turn off the hammer function and also have a torque setting that is a must for a screwdriver function. So it is possible to get a one size fits all solution here. The staff at Bunnings are super helpful and if you ask them to show you all the drills that suit your requirements, they will. but just decide in advance whether you want a DIY drill/driver or a commercial product that may well last so much longer. I won't make a recommendation as this is a very subjective area but the Bunnings staff will guide you i am sure.

Hi @Flower22,

If the gift might be used for any light masonry drilling, I would definitely go with the hammer drill. I have that model myself, and it is genuinely handy for putting small plugs into a brick or doing light masonry work around the home. Since it is battery-powered, it can struggle a little with very hard concrete, but for jobs like hanging pictures in brickwork, it performs well.

Because you can switch the hammer function off and use it as a standard drill driver, there is really no downside compared with buying the regular drill. You get the same everyday functionality, plus the option for light masonry when needed. I actually reach for my battery-powered hammer drill first and only move to a corded drill if I need to make larger holes in harder concrete.

It is a great all-around tool, and I would recommend choosing the Ryobi 18V ONE+ Hammer Drill All Rounder Kit over the standard drill driver.

I was looking at buying the starter pack with the hammer drill called “Ryobi 18V One + Hammer Drill 2Ah Kit with 90 Accesories”

That one comes with the driver and drilling bits which sounds great but has the smaller battery of 2. I that one too useless? I think it will probably be used mainly for simple jobs around the home or assembling furniture. How long would that battery go for? Thank you!

The life of the battery depends on how much effort and use are going to be applied to it. Drilling multiple holes in a brick wall? That is a lot of heavy-duty use and will use up a lot of the battery. Assembling furniture does not require a great deal of effort and your battery may last quite a while before it needs to be charged again. Drilling into regular pine timber? Again, if it does not require a great deal of strength from the drill the battery can accomplish multiple tasks. If this is going to be a gift, purchasing an extra battery Ryobi 18V ONE+ 2.0Ah Compact Battery is a great way to complete the set as one battery is in use and the other is on charge which guarantees that the job will get done.
