How to mount a fountain in a fiberglass pond?

Hello,

We have a heavy old concrete fountain that has been a dry garden ornament up till now. Weighs about 250kg, height 2.1m, base diam 400mm. We have seen this same ornament in use as a fountain, which looked really good. So now we want to place it in a pond, and turn our old ornament into a fountain. I picked up a fiberglass pond shell 1.8m diam x .45m deep, which is perfect for the space we have.

What is required for a successful installation, where the fiberglass pond liner doesn't get damaged by the weight?

Traditionally these concrete fountains were installed onto a concrete reservoir base which acts as the pond section. If this ornament was already there previous to your occupation, please check to see if there is a concrete base/reservoir located under the soil. It is quite common for these to fill up with debris over the years and become buried.

Did you purchase the fibreglass pond shell from us as I can't find a product of similar description? A concern I have is that if it is indeed a fibreglass shell then that is a solid material and might crack if the ground is not perfectly flat and compacted. A low-density polyethylene pond could be more forgiving.

I would encourage you to follow the manufacturers directions on the installation of the pond shell and to contact them to find out if it is suitable to bear the weight of a 250kg feature. Please let me know if it was purchased from Bunnings and I would be happy to provide specific installation instructions and clarify its suitability for the feature.

Thanks for your help Mitchell.

Bunnings have supplied the concrete, mattock, shovel, rake, wheel barrow, gloves, etc.

The pond liner brand is "gumtree" , and didn't come with instructions! 🙂

I think I will make a bed of sand (or stone dust?), then a concrete footing, then the liner.

Hi @Ghans001,

The real trick is getting a stable, level bed so a good layer of river sand is best. Stone dust can have small, sharp bits in it which can damage a liner (rigid or flexible).
You can then lay some large format pavers or concrete pads to stand the fountain on. I like to set these with a 30 or 40mm gap between them as this can give you easy access for piping etc. (see pic)

Also... make sure that your bed is compacted & stable before putting the liner in.
