How to paint outdoor patio tiles?

Hi,

I have a large rectangular outdoor patio area which is covered from top and two sides and exposed from the remaining two sides. This area is lined with old Terracotta tiles which are looking tired and tarnished.

I was wondering if I can paint over it to rejuvenate the area. If its possible, I will need advice re which specific primer and type of paint to use.

Any help will be appreciated

Ok I understand painting over the tiles might not be the most appropriate thing to do.

So I am now looking at other alternatives.

1- I could buy the specialist Terracotta clay paint from Bunnings, and paint or 'stain' over existing tiles? note the terracotta is usually porous and unglazed. OR

2- Restore the tiles by first using a cleaner e.g Peerless Jal or Tricleanium and then seal with Crommelin natural finish sealer?

Can I use orbital sander to aid in cleaning process?

Hi @Navz,

You'll need to do a thorough cleaning of the area, regardless of the process you select. Whether you paint or stain or rejuvenate with a sealer really has to do with the look you want to achieve. Once you give the area a good clean down, it should become evident whether a clear coat will solve the issue or if you need to hide imperfections with a paint or stain.

I'd suggest trying a pressure cleaner to make life easier.
