Studio and shed in the making

This studio and shed is still a work in progress, but we have some big plans for these things!

Designed by Sarah. Engineering signed off by a private certifier. Built by us, with a little bit of help from family and friends along the way. 🙂

Hoping to update with progress pics along the way.

Is it just me or do the time lapse videos make it seem deceptively simple? Another great project @DIYgals. Thanks again for sharing. What have chosen to do for a flooring treatment?

@JaneK Haha yes the time lapse makes this project seem super easy and fast. The concrete has a burnished finish and we are looking to seal it in the coming days. Any tips or suggestion on how or what to use to do so would be greatly appreciated!

Another fantastic project, @DIYgals!

When you say the concrete is burnished, does it have a rough texture? If so, I'd recommend a product similar to Crommelin 10L DiamondCoat Natural Paving And Concrete Sealer. It doesn't change the concrete's look but is highly water repellant in nature and provides stain resistance. However, if the concrete is smooth, I'd encourage you to consider polishing it.

Where were you going to use the rest of the decking timber? I think a deck along the front of the studio would look fabulous and provide a great location for a three-piece setting and a cuppa.

It has a very smooth finish, a bit like a Bunnings floor. Working with concrete is a bit foreign to us. Will the Crommelin Diamond Coat still work on a smooth finish?

Yes, the deck out the front of the studio with a three piece and a cuppa is exactly what we are thinking!

The Diamond coat is a penetrative sealer, so it will still work on a smooth surface @DIYgals. However, with your skillset, I'd love to see you give a polished surface a go, as the results would be amazing. You've absolutely smashed every other project, so I have no doubt you'd be able to achieve a spectacular finish. Please have a look at a few examples before committing to a coating.

We have lined our workshop wall with OSB brace board to provide a bit of a sound barrier for our neighbours when using loud tools and machinery and because we think it is a little bit more aesthetically pleasing.

What we used:

OSB Braceboard

Wafer Head Screws

Earthwool Insulation

We started by filling between the purlins with the earth wool insulation. This stuff is pretty nasty to work with so make sure you're wearing long sleeves, pants, gloves, safety glasses and a mask.

We were lucky that the distance between each of the verticals is 2400, which meant we were able to fit two brace boards side by side without cutting with a butt join in the middle. If the boards needed to be trimmed we would ensure the original edges were used to form the butt join. We decided to use wafer head screws to avoid the screws pulling through the board.

We found this quite a simple project and feel like it has transformed the original workshop wall.

That looks fantastic, @DIYgals! Adding the lining boards has transformed the feel of the space dramatically. Those concrete floors are looking great too. Have you coated them with something?

Yes, we have sealed just the workshop floor at this stage. We chose a cementaid product called S50. We are very happy with the result. 🙂

1. What sisalation did u use on the garage roof?

2. What did u use to seal / fill in the corrugations of the shed against the concrete slab?

We have used a product called air cell on the ceiling of the shed and studio and on the walls we are using Earthwool.

We poured the cement floor after the shed had been erected for a number of reasons, one being to avoid any gaps between the floor and the sheets. There are products you can get that have been made for this such as Vermaseal, not sure if you can install as an after thought though. Could be something worth looking into?

Thanks @VG ! The studio which contains a bathroom 10m * 4.5m, to the eaves it is 3m and the pitch of the roof is 35 degrees. The bathroom is 2m X 4.5m, within that we have found there is plenty of space for shower, toilet, wall hung sink and space for a washing machine. Will post photos when we have finished this part.

The shed we have built is exactly the same, just with a smaller footprint (7.5 x 4.5m).

Our original plan was to build one large structure and then divide between the shed and studio, however council would not allow.

The shed that I'm thinking of creating is approx 7 x 6 .. but thinking of flat roof.. I'm guessing you got the materials from Bunnings..?

@VG The shed cladding is a NEXTEEL product, the steel C section was ordered through an Australian Steel supplier here in Adelaide.

I so wish my concrete slab had of been laid post shed erection. The termit proofing put in post build has already moved. Snakes etc will become my constant fear i suspect. I'm on 6 acres with a winter creek at the other end of block. The last shed i had put in was build prior to concrete slab and was secure as, minimal dust termites etc in a goldmining town of constant fine red dust, my shed was secure.
