How to redo cladding on shed?

Hi,

The cladding on my shed is old and falling to pieces in places. Is the simplest way to clad with hardiflex board? I only want to paint, not render or add texture.

If so, the board sizes are 900 or 1200. The current boards on my shed are 913. Is there any way to fill a larger gap in between boards or would I have to put extra studs all over the frame work to support the different sized sheets? Thanks

Thank you for sharing your question about redoing the cladding on your shed.

Keeping to the conditions you've laid out, I suggest using James Hardie HardieFlex™ 3000 x 1200 x 4.5mm Cladding 3.6m². Each sheet can be cut to provide you with at least three pieces at your preferred size of 913 x 1200. Using this sheet will save you from having to put in extra studs.

Would it be possible for you to provide us with the size of your shed and the doors installed? With this information, we can calculate the number of sheets you will need more accurately.

Hi @gn and thanks for the tag @EricL,

Hardieflex will be one of the cheaper and easier ways to reclad your shed, and I like @EricL's suggestion to buy the 3000mm lengths and then cut to size. This will allow you to adjust for any slight variation in spacing of studs as well, which being an old shed could be the case. I know that you have said you don't intend to render however if rendered is a look that you like there is actually a hardie board that is designed with a fine texture to appear as though it is rendered. It is called EasyTex and is a bit more expensive than simple hardieflex but could be worth a look

My only concern would be to make sure that if the current cladding is asbestos that you get it removed by a professional asbestos removal contractor. If you're not sure what it is currently clad with I'd reccomend having it tested first just to be safe as playing around with asbestos is a dangerous game.
