Hi guys, wondering if you can sand and varnish the timber sleeper in the attached photo? I’m hoping to make a hallway table….
Hello @Diy_Shell
Thank you for sharing your question about the timber for your hallway table.
It's great that you are building a hallway table. Would it be possible for you to post a photo of the yellow ticket of the timber? This will allow us to identify what timber you are referring to. As an alternative, I suggest using the 200 x 50mm 2.4m Durable Mixed Hardwood Sleepers they have no chemical treatment in them and provide long-lasting service. Timbers that are exposed to the weather often have some form of treatment on them. I suggest checking with the store's timber specialist before purchasing the wood.
I recommend using the Ozito ¼ Sheet Orbital Sander, it uses standard Flexovit 100mm x 1m 240 Grit Painted Surface Sandpaper Roll. If you plan to varnish the table, I propose using Cabots 1L Gloss Clear Benchtop Timber Finish. It is food-safe, non-yellowing, and heat resistant. Please keep us updated, we would be keen to see your progress while you build your table.
