Frustration over the lawn seed issues

We can't get our heads around the reason why those lawn seeds don't grow particularly on that area (whereas we succeeded to grow them elsewhere)

It seems the soil might be too sandy and have insufficient nutrition?

We followed these steps below:

1) Rake the soil

2) Sowing

3) Watering

Its been two weeks with sunlight and constant watering.

Now we are thinking if we should get some fertilizer for those poor soil. Any Bunnings product recommendations for sandy soil?

(Or we should replace those soil with new one....? Time- consuming)

We're just beginners in gardening.

Hi @ivanptr looking at the shape & size of that spot I reckon you'll get a better, faster & more cost effective result just buying a couple of rolls of turf and putting that in.
My preferred seeding or under-turf fertiliser is this one.

I'm sorry to hear that the Lawn Seed has not worked for you. Are you after the Sir Walter 0.5m² DNA Certified Soft Leaf Buffalo Turf Slab? You must speak to your store's Gardening Specialist and ask them what day the Turf delivery arrives at the store. It is one of the fastest-selling items in the store. It is so popular that people go to the store on the day the Turf gets delivered.

The small stores don't have enough space to stock this. Please tell me the closest store in your area, I can make some inquiries for you and try and source your Buffalo Turf.

Thanks Eric , we layed the turf for our first time. Its much cost effective and faster than seeding ☺️

But we're worried the soil under has not sufficient nutrition for our newly installed turf.

We see that there can be two ways to revitalise those dead soil?

1) Change the underneath soil straight away (most direct way but very time consuming)

2) Spray some liquid fertilizer in hope of those soil absorbing the necessary nutrition

Do you hv any product recommendations? If we use liquid fertilizer, could we just spray them on the turf ? Or we need to spray on the soil under turf?

Hi @ivanptr you can apply the one I mentioned before to new turf. Best if underneath but it's a mild fertiliser so okay for on top if too late to roll back. Just make sure you don't over-apply.
The other option is a hose-on product. I'd lean towards a product with seaweed as that will help improve the soil over time. Do remember though that these straight seaweed products don't have any fertiliser in them so best to add some extra lawn food too.

It's great that you've received fantastic advice from @Adam_W. I totally agree with his recommendation of using Scotts Lawn Builder 4kg Starter Slow Release Lawn Fertiliser. Using Seasol 1.2L Hose On Lawn Care is ideal for lawn care. Please make sure to read the instructions at the back of the bottle for proper application. Hi @Adam_W ! We bought the Scotts lawn builder starter fertilizer you mentioned

But we are so.... stupid, it's not until later that we realize we need a spreader...

Tomorrow we're going to visit the site and try this product:

1) Take out those turfs (just 3 turfs, the area is small)

2) Use hands to spread those lawn fertilizer granules on the underlying soil

3) Reinstall 3 turfs

4) Watering

Would you think it's acceptable to simply use hands instead of a spreader?

If we spread too much will that be a problem?

Hi @ivanptr,

You can get by without a spreader, but it can be difficult to get an even spread by hand. Just sprinkle the fertiliser around instead of throwing handfuls in certain spots. If you're going to pick up a spreader, the Saxon Hand Fertiliser Spreader would be perfect for this job. If you had other uses for the spreader, wanted a higher quality unit, or one that allows you to select the dispersal rate via a selector switch, the Scotts Handy Green Fertiliser Spreader Hand Held Fertiliser Spreader would be the way to go. Functionality wise, they do the same job.

Here is what we did :

1) We rolled and turn the turf up side down, and we use the spreader on the Back of those turfs first. (The soil is not exactly leveled that's why we feel concerned if we only spread on the uneven soil , the back of turf cant fully come into contact with the soil)

2) Then we spread on the soil.

3) Reinstall those turf

4) Spreader again on the front surface of turf

5) Watering

Hopefully those turf can absorb sufficient nutrition and slower the dying process

You've done very well with the turf. I suggest watering the turf daily and not allow it to get very dry. The repair job looks very good. All we need to do now is wait for the turf to take root.
