hi , I have bought so many plant pots only to find they are too small once the plant needs repotting. I was wondering if I could paint the bigger plastic pot and not poison the plant in it
Hello @brendawebster44
If you are painting only the outside of the plastic pot, it should be ok. I suggest using sandpaper on the plastic pots to remove their shiny finish. This will allow the paint to adhere to the body of the plastic pot. I recommend using Rust-Oleum 340g 2X Ultra Cover Paint+Prime Gloss White Spray Paint or your preferred colour to go over the plastic pot. Do not spray the inside of the pot only the outside.
You can also get specialty Spray Effects that mimick marble, gold, and granite finishes. I recommend going to the spray section of the paint department of your local store and check out all the options available.

Hi well thanks so much for replying but when I looked through my paint left overs couldn’t believe I found prime and paint left over for inside or outdoor in Magnolia mixed it with some leftover blue from a small pot just a tad and will use that. Never the less I felt better knowing I was ok to do so . Thankyou so much b🌺
Hi @brendawebster44
It's good to know that you've got some leftover paint. Please don't forget to post an update once you finish your project. We look forward to seeing your painted flower pots.
hi Eric and everyone, I didn’t really have time today to do much of anything. I deliver for people who can’t get out for one reason or another. Anyway a lady in the group suggested painting it with a textured paint. So ran around thinking I have all that except the textured paint. Checked the garage and I had all the correct types of paint except they weren’t textured. Emm! I can’t get anything from Bunnings too late we’ll I will make it myself, and I indeedie I did. Photos tomorrow and I bet no one guesses what I did. When I get a few guesses I ll tell you and see what you think. Necessity is the mother of invention.b🌺
Hi Eric, I certainly will show you my plant pot , I tried two colours but didn’t like them. Then I found some inside outside semi gloss enamel and mixed it with a secret ingredient to make it textured. I want to see if anyone can guess what the secret ingredient is but if I can learn how to send a private message i will tell you. I have one more step to finish it but it is not easy when I have so many things to do as well. I took your advice about the paint on the concrete but just to see if it worked I tried some goof off I bought from Bunnings ages ago and my wire brush (I had a injection into my hip so I could bend down) and it came off so easily then just hosed it down. Thankyou for all your advice and faith in me brenda
@brendawebster44 Looking forward to seeing the pic and having a guess at what you textured it with!
I can’t wait to show you, I just want to waterproof it tomorrow and it’s all yours. Just remember I can’t always afford to buy what I would like so a good imagination is key, yours b🌺
Well here goes, what is the secret ingredient in the paint
Excellent work, @brendawebster44! You'll have to let us know your secret ingredient, but I'm also keen to see if our members can guess.
Many thanks for sharing.
Mitchell
hi, thankyou for your feedback, but to be honest I don’t think I will be doing it again hahaha 😝
This looks fantastic! @brendawebster44 A job well done that you can be proud of 👍🏻
Thankyou but what is the texture b
Hmm.. oats? 🤔 @brendawebster44
Hi everyone well it’s time to disclose the secret of the textured paint.. I already have but lost the post. It is Peperini Pasta. I don’t think it was meant for this purpose but it was all I had. You put it in salads etc. for a bit of texture ( bit ironic) I will tell everyone how but most dash b
What an interesting technique! I never realized you could use Peperini Pasta as an additive to create textured paint. Unfortunately, part of your post got cut off, I suggest not leaving your post online too long so that the page does not time out. I'm sure our members would be keen to know how you use your secret method of pasta and paint.
Hi Eric, lapsing out was Unfortunatly because of one pop down after the other the last pop down cut me off and took me to it’s website.Sounds like I’ve been kidnapped eh!. I apologise to everyone I had the exterior enamel full gloss magnolia that was meant for the doors water based and thought it would nice blue. So I mixed a tad of blue from a sample pot and it looked revolting. So I decided Magnolia would at least not put you off your dinner. Now how to make it textured. I remembered a chap called Eric the wise who said sand back well before use to give the paint something to grab.So that was completed first . Then what to use?Well I put a grain of rice in my car key to lock or unlock the doors but I felt a bit Mediterranean so pasta it was. So I mixed it in and literally slapped it on with the help of next doors kids. The paint that landed on the garage floor was no problem as I pay attention to the words of Eric the wise. This was repeated the next day and left to dry completely. I couldn’t leave it longer it was full of seedlings some with strange white marks on the leaves. When dry I covered the seedlings with gladwrap and gave the pot a good spray ofMonocel exterior clear varnish Satin I had used on my chair from Bunnings. And there you have it. The moral of this novel is don’t buy more seedlings than pots to put them in. All the best to everyone still awake brenda and Charlie
Thankyou Mitchel, it was fun and a lesson for me to wait for the recommended time. b🌺
I went to Bunnings and after walking around for a few hours( with Charlie in the cart (he loves Bunnings too). I bought a selection of herbs only to get home and find I had no pots. No problem I checked the garage and found a pot of red mixed it with pasta and bobs your uncle.b🌺
Hi EricL
Can you tell me if it is plant-safe to paint/spray inside pot (at least a few cm's down to where potting mix would come to)?
Cheers
Hello @Moragajagga
In theory, yes you can paint up to the soil level of the pot. However, the drawback is that the soil will continually be in contact with the painted part of the pot. This plus the heavy moisture of the soil will deteriorate the paint a lot faster. Putting in ornamental plants is ok, but, I don't recommend using edible plants as paint chips from the paint could mix into the soil of the pot.
Cement?
Hi @Gayleis,
Thank you for your question.
You can certainly paint the outside of concrete pots but if the inside of the pot is not sealed, water can pass through the concrete and cause flaking and damage to the paint on the outside of the pot.
You can line the inside of the pot with GRUNT 2 x 5m Black 70um Multi Use Plastic Film so moisture is not in direct contact with the concrete.
Start by giving the surface you want to paint a good clean with warm soapy water and a brush to remove any dirt or contaminants that can affect adhesion.
Allow to dry, then apply a coat of Dulux 1Step Prep Primer, Sealer & Undercoat.
Allow the coat of primer to dry before applying an external paint such as Dulux Weathershield in a colour and gloss level of your choosing.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
Jacob
Thank you Jacob!
