Leaking shower recess, waterproof and retile

Decided it was time for a shower recess reno, upon removal of old 80's era tiles found was no visible waterproof membrane between shower tiles and plasterboard wall.

Brushable waterproofing membrane was applied and replaced 'drummy' shower tiles with Bunnings 'Duratile 60x30cm ceramic wall tiles.

Thank you so much for sharing those progress photos and the final result after tiling. Looking at the earlier photos without the waterproofing was a bit alarming. Had there been a major grout failure, it would have damaged your timber framing as well. Which waterproofing membrane did you use? How many coats did you apply? How much time did you spend on the entire project? My apologies for the many questions, I'm sure our members would appreciate any other details you can share about the renovation. Now that the project is finished, are there any tips or advice you would like to share with those who are thinking of attempting this kind of renovation?

Yes it all began with noticing 2 strips of swollen bulged floating floor in the adjacent hallway. Upon removing the floor trim found damp and appearing to be coming from shower base perhaps. Bottom shower wall tiles were a tad swollen and 'drummy' when tapped and suspected grout failure.

Pressure pipe test was ok and dye leak detection test showed failed grout and 'waterproofing' has allowed water to leak from the shower recess area when in use.

It's a good thing you picked up on the issue before the leak did any significant damage to the framework @Sidney7. Well done on your waterproofing and tiling job. It looks fantastic.
