This narrow laundry looks brighter and feels more open after installing white cabinetry and moving the taps under a new benchtop.
The project
We had the original laundry in our house and decided it was time to give it a makeover. It was a narrow space and we wanted it to look simple and open.
I did all the work myself except moving the plumbing. It took about a week to do and we kept to budget. We are happy with the results, and I got to learn new skills.
Our design gives us more counter space now, and the white cabinets make the room look brighter. The hardest part was cutting the benchtop to size and fitting it into a narrow space. I had never used a circular saw before, but it wasn't too hard. My favourite feature is the round sink. It is just the right size and functions really well.
We moved all the taps to underneath the benchtop and hid it inside one of the cabinets. It gave us more bench space and a cleaner look.
Once the water outlets were moved, we repaired the walls.
We sealed the wet areas and painted the walls and ceiling.
The washing machine was too heavy to move so we kept it in the laundry and worked around it.
My wife chose these marble-look subway tiles.
I cut the benchtop to fit the space and varnished to prevent water damage. I prepared the surface by sanding with 240-grit sandpaper and then applied Timber Protect Gloss One Coat Clear Water Based Varnish using a paint brush. I applied three coats and left it to dry overnight between coats with a final sand after the last coat.
I was surprised by how easy it was to install the cabinets.
We love the soft-close drawers.
