Silver Princess Eucalyptus marks on leaves

Hope you are keeping well. I had a question. We got a silver princess eucalyptus recently and its leaves have this marks in the last couple of weeks. How can we treat these marks and what kind of disease is it ? Please see photo below.

I've been fantastic, thanks, Partha (@PN). I hope you've been well too.

I don't know if I could decipher whether this is just insect damage or whether it is something else that has damaged the leaves. It could potentially be leaf spot or blight, but I'm not particularly convinced of that. It's not unusual to have quite a few leaves like this, even on healthy Eucalyptus. How many of the plant leaves look like the one in the middle of the photo? If it's just one or two, you can just remove them and monitor the plant.

If you can manage to get some slightly more in focus shots of the damage, perhaps one of our gardening experts could identify the cause.

Many thanks for your help. i have removed the leaf from the tree and shared two more images below. There is 2 to 3 leaves in the tree like this. This leaf is the worst the others have one or two small spots.

It looks like a bacterial brown spot. This type of fungus attaches itself to the leaves and waits for the right conditions to propagate. This is usually when there is too much moisture in the air and there is not enough sun. Looking at your plant it seems to be in the early stages as it has not yet affected the stems. I suggest cutting the heavily infected leaves and using Yates 200ml Liquid Copper Fungicide. Please note that this is a concentrate and must be diluted before use.

Hi @MitchellMc and @EricL Sorry to bug you again. I got the Japanese Mapel now with these white spots. The mapel is in full sun in the front garden ( part of the lawn to wild life garden makeover project). Recently it has copped a severe battering from winds blowing.

What should I treat the leaves with?

Hello @PN

Have you recently had a lot of rain in your area? Did plenty of leaves come off the Maple tree? I suspect it could be anthracnose, touch the leaves of the tree and see if it feels like it has a powdery texture on it. If it does this is usually a sign of fungal infection. In this instance, you'll need to change your watering habits. I recommend watering only the base of the Maple tree and not the leaves. This is to prevent the further spread of the fungus. Remove all of the fallen leaves on the ground and place them in the bin. Do not mix them in your compost. The fungus thrives on dead leaves and dead vegetation. I suggest clearing the area of these to prevent them from spreading into the roots of the tree. I suggest using Yates 200ml Liquid Copper Fungicide to treat the Maple tree.

We have had a fair bit of rain in recent weeks. Will note what you said about not watering the leaves. There is no falling of leaves from the tree. I will use the Yates Fungicide to treat the tree.

Happy New Year and hope you had a good Christmas and New Year break. I wanted to provide an update on the Silver Princess. I applied the copper spray on the silver princess and have done so twice at a fortnight's interval.

I was worried about the silver princess as it was not showing any growth - but in the last few days it has come out of hiatus and has had an explosion of leaf growth. I am now more optimistic that it will grow. I have it in a part shade part sun part of the back yard. Hoping it continues to grow.

The addition of Seasol will definitely improve the overall condition of your plant. How is your Maple tree? I hope that it is in better condition, I suggest using Sesol on it as well. Many thanks. Will use the Seasol on the Maple also. With the Maple the recent hot days where we are has meant it has copped a battering. We have two maples, one in half sun and this one that was impacted by the disease is probably not planted in the right position in the garden. It is in an open area in the front lawn. The copper seems to have helped the symptoms I am waiting to see the impact of the heat Eric.

Very chuffed to see the first flower on the grevillea that we planted recently in the front garden lawn makeover to wild life garden. This grevillea was planted before an earlier one ( not same variety) the earlier one does not seem to have flowered till now ( growing though slowly) but this one has flowered. Will take it !

Hope you are keeping well and safe. Sorry to bug you again on some expertise request. I applied Hortico Weed and Green on the lawn and since then the grass is more yellower and these weeds have sprung up throughout the garden.

I wanted to check what is the best thing to apply to eliminate these weeds. And also is it better to use a lawn fertiliser than weed and feed to promote lawn growth?

In these situations, I suggest taking the next step and that is to physically remove the weeds. Because the weeds have established themselves so well, the chemicals you use will only do so much. I recommend using Trojan Stainless Steel Hand Weeder in combination with Saxon hand Cultivator with Timber Handle. It may take some time, but eventually, you will be able to bring the weed problem under control.

Thank you @EricL . I will get hands on to tackle them as per your suggestion. We do have a fiskar's weed puller that we got from Bunnings but it is more suited for larger weeds as it creates too many large holes in the lawn. I will go with the Trojan Hand Weeder that you have shared. thanks again.

Hi @EricL and @MitchellMc hope you have been keeping well. I need help with a query. The silver princess eculapytus and the sheltered Japanese Maple in the back garden both continue to do well.

The front garden Japanse Maple is not doing well. I think it is too exposed - it is the middle of the lawn ( as part of our front lawn makeover). I sprayed copper on both maples few weeks back and the front maple was looking better after the initial spray. But now the leaves at the top especially look very sick.

I have applied Seasol Gold liquid again today and also a bit of copper on the top leaves.

Should I transplant this plant to a more sheltered part of the garden. If so how do I go about transplanting as in what is best practice to take the plant out of the ground.

I'm sorry to hear your plant still has issues, Partha (@PN).

It appears to be a bit of scorching to the leaves, which could be because of buffeting winds, or it's just too hot out in the front yard. In hotter climates, they enjoy some dappled afternoon shade.

To transplant, it might be worth waiting until it cools off. If you do it now and have a couple of hot days, then it's almost certainly going to be the end for the plant. Could you pop some shadecloth over it on the hot days to protect it in the front yard?

If you were to transplant, you'd want to dig the whole root ball out without damaging it and resist disturbing it at all. Dig your new hole and place the rootball into it, backfilling around.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Sannah. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about your Silver Princess.

You might like to have a read through page one of this discussion where @EricL gives some advice that appeared to solve the issue. The most common diseases for eucalyptus are fungal and bacterial rots, especially root rot. Brown spots forming on the leaves are a good indicator. Root rot is a bit harder to diagnose as the initial damage happens below the soil's surface. Typically these diseases come about due to wet weather, poor drainage, or damp conditions that prevent air circulation from reaching the tree's centre.

Applying a copper-based fungicide like Yates 200ml Liquid Copper Fungicide would be the best place to start. You must also continue diligently removing affected leaves to stop the spread of disease. It's also worth cleaning up around the base of the tree and removing leaves from the ground where disease can spread from.

Do you have good drainage in the area, and how often are you watering? Any clay layer? Do you check that the soil is dry 10cm down before watering? How long does the soil take to dry out after watering?

Get a systemic fungicide spray @PN and give it a good spray. It may need two applications two weeks apart. Then give it two sprays of white oil over a fortnight. Pull any mulch back from the trunk so the ground around it can dry. Next sprinkle some anti fungal powder as well as spreading a slow release native fertiliser. Wash in with Seasol. Get the tree healthy again takes a bit of time but this will work. Keep branches from reaching the ground (ie cut them off before they hit the ground) and regularly rake around the canopy on the lawn to get rid of diseased or old leaves. If not resolved in a month after the above just repeat the above. You can also spray it with copper, or pyrethrum as an secondry response. Good luck, they are a stunning tree. Oh I forgot they don’t like wet feet so spray an anti rot tree root spray as well to protect the roots.
