How to attach shade cloth from roof side to Colorbond fence?

Hi All,

Just wanted to know what I can use to attach a shade sail from the roof side (I was planning to use a fixing of some type to fix under the gutter area shown in picture 2) to the top rail of the colourbond fence (shown in picture 3).

Strictly speaking, neither of those two locations is appropriate to have a shade sail attached to them. The Colorbond capping is not a structural member, and I'm not quite sure what that board is under the gutter. Is it timber? If so, you'd be better off attaching directly to the brick wall.

If this is just a small shade sail, then you could likely get away with attaching Coolaroo Shade Sail Pad Eyes in both locations. You should find this step-by-step guide useful: How to install a shade sail.

@MitchellMc Thanks for your response, I wanted to install the shade sail the whole length but may not be a good idea without some posts, the piece underneath the gutter is the same material as the gutter.

Concreting in suitable posts would be the way to go, @littlediyman. If that is just steel flashing, I'd suggest using the wall as the anchor point.

I know this post, the one I've come across while researching ways to put shade cloth from my exterior roof line of my house to the adjoining boundary fence/Colourbond as @littlediyman was trying to get information on late last year earlier this year.

I am in the same situation, but actually have a few pictures to share that may give @MitchellMc a clearer picture of what I think ?? @littlediyman may have been trying to ask of you Mitchell?? not 100% maybe @littlediyman can confirm or deny if this is what he was trying to explain and if so how did you get on @littlediyman ??

I have seen this done many ways, but the one my neighbour has, which is super strong, with the shade cloth supported and attached to aluminium braces, every 500/600mm was there when they purchased their home so he doesn't have a clue..Pitch from house to fenceOpps, My side of house veiw that I want to do the same some how?Front adjoining Fence view

My neighbour has it on his side of the fence which makes it difficult for me to do the same as he has utilised the top of the adjoining fence. Some advice would be super appreciated as I don't even know if this type of shade cover even has a name.

Interesting, @Old-gal24.

You could construct the same set-up by offsetting the beams to the neighbours. Theirs appears to be a proprietary system using some type of shade panel. I've drawn a rendering below to illustrate better.

Please check with your local council to see whether this type of build complies with regulations in your area.

Hi @Old-gal24,

Its been a while since I visited these forums, but the way I did it was similar to the "DIY Shade kits W.A" https://m.facebook.com/DIY-Shade-Kits-WA-103995145448906/videos/correct-way-to-fit-channels/604356150617598/ do their system.

Essentially I attached a V-grip locking strip to the gutter side and one onto the color bond fence (both have been attached by screws) and then attach the shade cloth.

the V-grip locking strip can be brought at bunnings https://www.bunnings.com.au/locking-strip-v-grip-1-83m-slate-grey_p3300601. Tbh this was the cheapest solution for me and worked well.

Sorry I still don't get the bracket part... 🙁 Old timers hey! And being plastic, the temps are so extreme here - I don't think they would last very long.

## PS: Just did a google and watched a U-Tube video and discovered exactly how they work.. What an awesome invention.. Next trip to Bunnings and I will check them out. Many thanks @littlediyman do you have any photo's you could add of where you have yours installed? # V-Grip locking strip on my shopping list.

I am thinking I will get in and use large black polly and shade cloth, sew seams/channels, and thread the pipe through. Like a dome. It's the fixings that I have to check out. Saddle clamps would possibly do the trick?!

Oh well too much else to do right now, between days of rain, so I will tackle that task after I get the sides of my house cleared out and pave.

This is EXACTLY what they have done, but their side of the house is wider than mine and I would need to have mine on a much higher pitch to reach the facia like they have done, and there isn't much of my facia available to attach anything too.. 🙁

I have been toying at sewing seams in shade cloth and threading the thick black polly *(the type with the blue lines in it) that I made shade house out of to protect my trees and garden for the first 2 or 3 Winters, after I established new gardens, 3/4 years ago.

I made covers out of 20mt rolls of FROST sheets which I sewed seams in with my sewing machine and slid the pipe through the seams to create large domes. Like a professional green house. The rolls of frost protection sheets where 20mt long, not sure how wide, but I used my sewing machine and sewed 5 or 6 rolls together and made covers. It saved my plants till they had time to get well established.. Jacarandas and the like are now several meters high due to the protection in the first 3/4 years of protection during the winters.. Oh no, sorry I waffled again.

That addition is not in the spirit of a good neighbour. The water run off alone comes onto your side. I'd propose to talk to the neighbour and get them to help devising a mutual solution that includes water run off.

First time user so hope this helps someone.

I attached my shadecloth from under the gutter to my colorbond fence using 'Ezy-Fix Clip'. I thought I'd purchased it from Bunnings but that was at least 15 years ago so not positive. There is a website though. It's really easy to install. The website has a video and I've only just pulled it down for fence extensions. The only difficulty is if you have a flyscreen door. Depending on the angle, the door will hit the shadecloth. I originally put a nail in the eave but ended up just removing the door. Hope this assists.

DO NOT instal any fixings to the colourbond facia or the fence capping. Neither are load bearing in any manner and any strong wind will destroy them if you do. If you must do the job then use a very open weave cloth to reduce the sail effect with the wind, attach dyna bolt or similar fixings to the brick wall and attach fixings to only the fence posts which are concreted into the ground. For the posts drill holes right through the post so as to fit ring bolts with at least three nuts, one nut on the sails cloth side of the bolt leaving enough thread to go through the post and then put a large gal. washer, at least as wide as the post and firstly put the second nut on and tighten the whole lot firmly, then put the third nut against the second so as to lock those nuts together. (locknut). Your sail will have to be custom made and you should not try to make it yourself, unless you are qualified. It will need a lot of strengthening cord sewn into the perimeter with attachment points to match the fixings you will have installed.
All in all a job for a professional.

Yes this is certainly an answer to the problem, but really not the sort of job for an amateur diy'er. Some 'trade' skills are required. Even then when the job is done you have a lovely valley in which to collect leaves, sticks and branches and other 'windfall' which would be very difficult to remove. Maybe a water blast from below would do the trick.
Normally the top cap on the fence is only attached by friction so a more permanent fixing to hold the cap on would be need. Do not underestimate the power of wind to lift all of this 'SAIL' and cause significant damage to the sail and surrounding structures.
As it is a permanent structure Council approval may be required.

Due to the level of finish on the structure, it would appear to be a manufactured product designed for this purpose. The beams are connected to the fascia with what looks to be a proprietary bracket. I can't see how they are attached to the fence; potentially, they are just sitting on it, but I suspect a hidden bracket exists.

Do you have timber fascia on your property? Do you plan to attach it to your fence like earlier in this thread?

There is likely a solution that will work for you using Coolaroo Shade Sail Pad Eyes and Coolaroo Shade Sail Turnbuckles slotted through the d rings of your tarp.

The main issue we'll have to examine is where they are attached. You'll note from earlier in this thread that you'll need to attach the tarpaulin to the structural elements of your home. This is because once attached, the tarpaulin will act like a wind sail, so it needs to be connected to something that can withstand the dynamic wind loads that it will encounter.

I'm happy to offer further advice once you can upload images of the area.

The BCA covers fire separation setbacks of buildings and decks from a boundary, but I've been unable to find any specific details on using combustible materials that would connect a property to a boundary fence. Hence, I've adjusted my original comment to remove the reference to using timber and mentioned checking with your local council on whether such an addition would be compliant.

Sorry I haven't replied before now, missed your post some how..

Not sure if you are still looking for way to put shade-cloth along the side of your home or not?

I gave up on the idea for my home, but I did pave down the sides of both sides of our home. I went a slightly different way, and put up a large trellis which I married up to the bedroom windows that needed the shade and privacy.

I will include some closer up pictures of the neighbours shade cloth cover down on their side of their fence. I couldn't go the same way as they have already taken up the entire top of the fence so I would have had to have altered part of there set up, which I didn't want to do *(didn't want neighbour issues) I also still wanted access to my gutters from the ground to be able to clean them out as both neighbours have very large trees and I am constantly cleaning out my gutters because of them both.

I should have this issue too badly, soon as we are moving. So starting all over again. with only back neighbours with large trees.. *(ummm).

I hope the attached pics are of some help, and if you or anyone else are interested and need more pictures please just ask.
