Can you install weatherboard cladding over brick?

Hi,

I am really needing some advice about whether anyone has ever installed weatherboard cladding over their brick exterior? I love the Hamptons/Victorian/coastal look and our brick exterior is in desperate need of a revamp (they’re the old yellow 70’s coloured bricks). I’m also keen to hear whether it turned out what you expected or if you had a lot of issues with it.

Hi @georgie
You can clad over brickwork
It will require either metal or timber battens fixed to the brickwork
Consideration also needs to be given to Flashing around openings ie windows and doors, brick weep holes, waterproofing, etc

Also check with your Council regarding compliance and energy requirements
You will need to put up photos as there are numerous details, these photos will also help others

I suggest you get the best BIM Wall Details , Data and project planning tools that you can afford

James Hardie actually has a FAQ on Cladding your Hamptons home, in case you were going for a similar look as @georgie. As mentioned, the simple answer is yes, you can install Weatherboards over bricks and it's something that is regularly done. However, this requires the installation of timber or steel battens over the brickwork, followed by a water-permeable membrane. You'll then be able to attach the Weatherboards to your battens. You cannot fix the Weatherboards directly to the brickwork.

I am looking at cladding at the moment over existing Brick Veneer house. I am aware of the need to batten brick to install cladding. Does the brick veneer need to be reinforced in any way to avoid wall being pulled over from extra weight? i.e. additional brick ties to timber frame?

My apologies for the late reply. Would you happen to know what your brick veneer is anchored to? Is it a masonry wall or a timber framed wall with FC sheeting in front of it? Your assessment is correct as the extra weight will definitely play a factor in the installation of the Weatherboards.

Once you provide me with the necessary information, I can then ask our supplier regarding the installation over brick veneer.

thanks for the reply.

the brick exterior of the home is anchored to the internal stud walls with brick ties. I am looking to use Hardie Linea cladding over the brick by anchoring timber battens to the brick.

I've just been in contact with JH technical team, and they've informed me that it would be best to engage the services of a structural engineer when designing and building the batten frame. I'm afraid adding additional brick ties will not be enough to hold the weight of the weatherboard.
