Bathroom heat lamp suggestions wanted

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to install new heat lamps [two globe options] in two bathrooms and have a few questions before I commit.

Most models at Bunnings (like IXL and CLICK) have an open top for exhaust. I’m worried this might let cold air in during winter, even when not in use. Has anyone experienced noticeable cold drafts with these?

I also saw some ducted models that vent through the side using aluminium ducting. Would these be better at retaining warmth? If so, can a regular electrician handle the duct install, or would I need someone else?

One bathroom window infill [the external area above the window] is timber or some sort of board—not brick. If I go with a ducted unit and need to run a vent outlet through that, is it safe long-term? Any moisture or damage concerns?

I already have a working exhaust fan with flaps that stop cold air, and I’m happy to keep it. Would it be fine to install a heat lamp separately, or is it better to go for an all-in-one heat/light/fan unit?

Also, any thoughts on IXL vs CLICK, or is there a better brand ?

Finally, what kind of installation cost should I expect for:

  • Basic install (no ducting)

  • Ducted install (with side venting)
    This is for two units.

Thanks for any tips or recommendations!

Re: Bathroom heat lamp suggestions

Hello @SouthFieldSnoop

I currently have a non-ducted exhaust fan in my bathroom, and it does not let cold air inside. But, in saying that, every roof and ceiling situation is different and while there is no draft entering my roof space yours might be a different story.  In regards to installation, a well experienced electrician should be able to install an exhaust fan along with its ducting. There should be no issue in regards to running the ducting from the fan unit to the eave of your house for ventilation. If installed properly the ducting along with the cover vents should provide a long service life.

If you are looking to install a new heat light and fan module it would be best to install just one unit rather than separate units that perform the same function. I suggest checking out the stores Exhaust And Heat Lamp Installation Service. It is currently priced at $160.00, please note that this not include any parts or accessories that the electrician might need to get your exhaust fan running.

I propose looking at the IXL Tastic Mirage 3 In 1 Bathroom Heater Exhaust Fan And Motion Sensor LED. Its big advantage is the larger motor and the motion detection sensor making the unit hands free when entering the bathroom. The other set I suggest is the Click 3-In-1 Bathroom Heat Lamp, its larger heat footprint provides a nice toasty warm spot when exiting the shower. Both of these units have very good reviews all the way up past four stars.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
