Can I replace my old tub with this corner one?

Hi, I'm planning to replace my old bathtub with this new one. I assume there won't be any tiles underneath the current tub, but since the new tub is larger, I plan to cover that area without adding tiles.

However, I have a concern about the water tap. My current tub is 46 cm high, and the center of the water tap is located at 62 cm. The new tub I'm considering has a height of 58 cm, leaving a 4 cm gap between the top of the tub and the water tap.

Would this setup work, or should I consider a shorter tub? Alternatively, should I look into relocating the water tap? I'd appreciate any advice.

Thank you for your question about installing a new bathtub.

You would need to use the Rick Mclean's Bathware 1500mm Modern FB13 Left Hand Corner Bath based on the orientation of the bathtub in your photo.

Typically, a bathtub like this will be installed before the tiles, so the tiles would not run underneath it. If this is the case, you will need to either fill the gap where there are no tiles or have the existing tiles cut so the tub will fit in the space. Of the two options, cutting the tiles will have the tub sit lower and considering the tap location, this is likely the better option.

You would need to check with a plumber whether this tap height is suitable and fits within the relevant Australian and New Zealand Standards.

I can't say for certain that this setup will work as I do not have access to the relevant standards. As you'll require a plumber's assistance for this installation regardless, I'd suggest speaking with them to go over the possibilities. While it is likely best you relocate the water tap, they may be able to offer a solution that will work for you.

After reading @JacobZ's suggestions I was also wondering about the waterproofing for the floor if you remove tiles to make the new tub fit nicely.

The only work around I can think of is to have a gooseneck for your tap to bring it higher then the edge of the bath but that means there will be a gap between bath and wall. I would definenlt go with asking a plumber for some recomendtaions as you are between a rock and a hard place.

Maybe ask the installer for the tub what would be the max height you could go to with the height of the bath and then change the actually bathtub you are thinking of? It could be an easier way forward.

There is going to be several complications to address once the tub is removed, which some have been raised by both @Dave-1 and @JacobZ.

Enlarging the photo I can see the tub was installed first into a timber frame and then tiled around both on the walls and floor. So, once removed will expose untiled area's that won't be covered by the new tub @JacobZ recommended or any other for that matter. Do you have spares or are the floor tiles still available?

There is a waterproofing concern mainly for the floor, but also for the top right end where the tiles continue into the shower recess. The shower glass would need to be removed to remove the tiles, and then that is the more important waterproofing requirement to rectify. These can be addressed by certified waterproofers that can apply a special tile adhesive combined with an epoxy grout and possibly a waterproofing clear coating over the final tile finish.

Since you will need to remove some of the walls tiles, then there is the opportunity to take a few more away where the taps and spout are. This would allow you to select new fittings and have the plumber reposition them higher to suit the new bath.

Once you settle on the exact bath you want and new taps, I would get a plumber in to discuss the project. Someone who does bathroom renovations and is or has access to a "certified" waterproofer. You also need to research the replacement tiles. If you can't find an exact match for the floor tiles, you could consider a different colour or patterned tile to boarder the tub. The wall tiles will be a trickier solution. They are quite a busy marble look, so if the main grey colour can be matched, the textured patten difference may not be noticeable at that lower level. Once you start the project, you can take a few pieces with you for matching.

Looking at all three of your answers, sounds like it will be full renovation. I will just leave it as it is. By any chance, do you think the waste drain can be replaced? I have an issue with cleaning as mould builds up around the edge...

Hi @sirano1004,

Unfortunately, it is not possible to replace without access to the underside of the bath. This is because wastes are attached by a collar nut on the underside of the bathtub.

Something like this Oates Soft Grip Grout Brush might help get into the tighter spots around the drain.
