Do you need to caulk a freestanding bath tub?

Hi there, is it necessary to caulk a freestanding tub?

Re: Bath tub install

Hi @torilee,

The need to caulk under a free-standing bath would be specific to the bath in question and what the manufacturer recommends. In many cases, no caulk is called for at all, but since some are so lightweight, they can shift around if they are not caulked beneath. It's best to follow the manufacturer's guidance, and if this is one of our free-standing baths, I'd be happy to find out the requirements for you.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Bath tub install

Thanks Mitchell, is it likely that waste will be compromised by slight movement of lightweight tub?

Re: Bath tub install

Hi @torilee

If the bath is accidentally pushed aside, it's possible that the waste assembly might get damaged. But as @MitchellMc mentioned, it depends on the bath's requirements. Some are so heavy that it does not require any caulking, while others are light weight and will need to be anchored onto the tiles with caulking.

I suggest checking the documentation that came with your bath. I also suggest consulting your plumber as they might have installed a similar type of bath before.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.
