How to affix a laundry benchtop?

Hi there,

Hope you are all well! We are embarking on a laundry refresh and want to install a bench top on the right land side of the laundry sink. We are listing our property to sell shortly and want to make the laundry a lot more dynamic - but don’t want to pay a lot. What would you recommend I use to get the bench top in place - nails, screws, bracket, masonry drill? Any help would be appreciated!!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your benchtop.

I propose using a combination of timber and angle brackets to hold the benchtop in place. I suggest using 70 x 35mm Framing MGP10 H2 Blue Pine 5.4m for the back and right-hand side of the benchtop. For the left-hand side near the laundry tub, I recommend using a Carinya 300 x 300mm White Heavy Duty Straight Stayed Bracket.

I suggest using a stud finder to find the studs behind your wall if you have a timber framed wall. I recommend using Zenith 10G x 75mm Gold Passivated Type 17 Countersunk Head Timber Screws - 50 Pack to screw into your timber stud. To drill into the tiles I suggest using a QEP 8mm Diamond Tile Drill Bit.

Please give me some time to draw up a quick sketch of the mounting. As soon as I'm finished. I'll post it here.

How about a laundry/kitchen cabinet shell? When I redid my laundry and went with "reuse as much stuff as I can" I used The old cupboard shells that had been pulled out of work. They dont need doors, they wont need brackets and are a very solid base to rest the bench on. I reused the plinth that the cupboards I reclaimed were sitting on but plastic kitchen feet would be better. (wet area thinking)

Laundry retrofit

The benchtop was the dearest part of the job, followed by the square sink. Even if you went with a Kaboodle 900mm White Base Cabinet and left a gap on the left or right for tall storage (floor to Bench) next to it it would still support the bench. Weighed up between heavy duty brackets and fixings it might be an option.

Thank you again Eric. Would I need to pre-drill the holes into the tile and stud before finally affixing the timber and bracket?

Yes, It would make it easier to do so. One thing that has worked for me when drilling holes in tiles (only done a couple as I generally avoid it as I always worry about the tile cracking 🙂 ) Is to place a cross of tape over the spot that I want to drill. It stops the drillbit skittering over the surface so easily. Id buy a fresh drillbit for tiles and start of with low pressure when drilling.
