How to build a hardwood slab vanity?

Hi,

We want to update our two bathrooms, removing the wash basin vanity and adding something minimalist.

What are the materials that I'd need?

Re: Hardwood/timber slab vanity

Hello @nirvikk

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your bathroom revamp.

The timber slab pictures you have posted are very thick and heavy and will require a builder to properly anchor it to your wall. It's highly probable that it will also be very expensive and not easy to source. If you are after something minimalistic, I suggest looking at CIBO 1200mm Coast Veneer Tonic Wall Hung Vanity, CIBO 900mm White Windsor Wall Hung Vanity and New England Joinery 1800mm Slim SilkSurface Top Wall Hung Vanity. These are wall hung vanities with low profiles.

However, if you wish to use a timber slab, I propose speaking to a builder and asking them if they can build a faux timber benchtop vanity. Generally speaking, it could be built using timber framing and a multipurpose panel to give it that timber slab look but without the heavy weight. Plus, it can be tinted to any colour you like. I've placed an image below to give your builder an idea of how it can be built.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: Hardwood/timber slab vanity

Hi Eric, thanks for your feedback.

I'm thinking of going with something with a timber slab and a bowl type sink on top.

Not as heavy as it looks like on the previous photo.

Do you think it's doable looking at my current basin vanity setup?

Re: How to build a hardwood slab vanity?

Hi @nirvikk,

Absolutely, that’s entirely doable.

You can remove your current benchtop—most are either screwed in from underneath with brackets or glued to the vanity carcass. If it’s glued, removal might take a bit more time and care, but it’s still manageable. Once the plumbing has been disconnected by a licensed plumber, you can replace the old benchtop with a timber slab or panel.

Bunnings has a good selection of multi-use timber panels that can be turned into custom benchtops. Just pick a timber that suits the look you’re after—merbau, hardwood, or even acacia are popular choices. It’s important to fully seal the timber before installation to protect it from water damage, especially around the basin area. A clear polyurethane or a dedicated timber benchtop sealer would work well.

For your basin, using a bowl-style one that sits on top of the benchtop (rather than recessed) makes installation much easier. You’ll just need to cut a hole for the waste and potentially another for the tap if it’s not wall-mounted.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: How to build a hardwood slab vanity?

thanks Mitch, I'll go to my nearest Bunnings and ask them if they can cut and make a couple of holes as well.

Re: How to build a hardwood slab vanity?

Hello @nirvikk

I'm sorry but the store does not provide that kind of service. I suggest engaging the services of a handy person who can drill and cut the holes for you.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
