How to build a wall-mounted sturdy table for ironing?

Hi there,

As a Bunnings account PowerPass member, I hope you can suggest the best solution and materials for our Retreat laundry room, where we mainly iron tablecloths. I need a wall-mounted folding table (to be fixed into a brick wall) that is sturdy enough for our use. The size we’re looking for is flexible, but at a minimum, we need to match our current standalone table: 1200 mm wide and 710 mm deep. Ideally, we wouldn’t mind if it’s slightly wider and deeper for extra space.

Thanks for your assistance.

Re: How to build a wall-mounted sturdy table for ironing?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Retreat. It's fantastic to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about ironing boards.

The only fold-down ironing centre we stock, the Robinhood Deluxe Ironing Centre, comes in well under your required size, at under 1200mm by about 400mm, so unfortunately, it would not be large enough for what you need. I've also checked their extended range, and they don't produce anything larger. Given the dimensions you are after, you would really be moving into semi-industrial-style units, and I am not aware of any off-the-shelf fold-down systems that would meet those specifications.

Would you be open to custom-building your own fold-down ironing table? It is definitely something you could achieve, and I would be more than happy to walk you through suitable materials, hardware, and a design approach that would give you the strength and stability you are looking for. If that is of interest, just let me know, and we can map out the full build. The only issue I can see with that is finding a suitably sized cover for the oversized board.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

thanks Mitchell for your email and reply . Yes, I would be interested in a custom-made one if you can get us all the materials and information, plus the price?

Re: How to build a wall-mounted sturdy table for ironing?

Hello @Retreat

I've drawn up a sample frame work for the fold away wall mounted table.

Here are the list of materials:

The approximate total will be - $273.60 but please leave room for the wall anchors. The measurements are based on the size of the available panel and 710mm is non-standard size and I had to use a 600mm panel. But it is much longer than the 1200mm that you currently have. Please adjust the measurements to your needs.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1, @Nailbag and @AlanM52 for their ideas.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric

Re: How to build a wall-mounted sturdy table for ironing?

Good Morning @Retreat

Would it be possible to post a few pictures of the area where you want the table to be? I had pictured it longways to the wall and when I saw @EricL's sketch I went "oops" lol

Having a thought over an alternative to @EricL's

The long side of the table/bench mounted via hinges to the wall (hinges top side of the bench)

A "L" table leg that is hinged so the long side of the L is attached to the bench (allowing it to be folded up), short side hinged to one of the ends of the L so it can folded over onto the long side of the L when storing. (Think picnic bench style)

Two heavy duty chains that are fixed to the wall and to the away from the wall edge to help hold the bench level.

The locking mechanisim I would use the same bolt that @EricL has suggested.

If I had to choose which idea I like I prefer @EricL's design, as I am just offering an alternative.
