How to clean brick tile floor?

Hello,

I have recently moved into a 1960s beach shack that has a brick/clay tile floor covered in decades old paint splatter and other stains and marks. They're uneven and quirky, and I really like them, but would like them to be clean. How would I do this?

Thanks for sharing your question about your brick floor. I suggest getting a clean rag and some methylated spirits and see if you can clean the paint off your bricks. Apply a small amount of metho on the corner of your clean rag and try and wipe down one of the paint splashes. If the paint starts to soften up and fade away it is water-based. But if nothing happens and the surface of the paint just gets shiny it is oil-based.

If it is oil-based, I recommend using a Trojan 6 In1 Multi Paint Scraper in combination with the Josco 3 Piece Hand Wire Brush Kit. Your goal is to break the surface of the paint splashes so that you can pick it apart with the scraper and brush. My best advice is to be gentle on the surface of the brick so that it does not damage the surface finish and make your repairs stand out. I can't recommend using a chemical stripper as it will most likely stain and damage the surface finish of the brick.

With a little bit of patience and perseverance, you should be able to remove most of the paint splashes and restore the look of your brick floor.
