How to clean shower base?

Hello community,

Wanting to get advice and guidance on how to clean my shower base.

It's a fairly old house 1970's house, recently purchased. The yellow discolouration is from the glue (I think?) used to seal the cracks in the base. The black I think is just grout.

I've attached photos. Any ideas on how to clean the yellow discolouration without removing the actual glue? And any suggestions to remove the black grout would be super helpful. Thanks!

Congratulations on your house purchase @Sarah345. This must be such an exciting time for you. Welcome to the community and please feel free to post anytime you need a hand - I'm sure there's lot of jobs you want to get stuck into!

It's a little hard to tell from you photos, but do you know if this is a terrazzo floor? Or if not, what the surface is? It will help ensure our resident Bunnings D.I.Y. experts and other community members provide the right advice.

Could the black discolouration be mould rather than grout? Have you tried anything as yet to remove it?

I was also wondering if you have access underneath the house to see if the base is leaking?

Hi @Sarah345,

It looks like you've done a great job already removing most of the mould buildup. For the residual discolouration and the black grout lines, I recommend giving it another few rounds with 30 Seconds 1L Shower Cleaner to help get it looking as clean as possible. If the grout is still stubborn and doesn't return to white with cleaner, it may be permanently stained, in which case using white grout paint can help restore its appearance.

As for the glue marks, those could be tricky. You could try using a bladed scraper or even some sandpaper to carefully remove them without damaging the surrounding surface. Just be sure to go slowly and test in a small area first.

Once you've tackled the stains, you can seal the base with a product like Shower plug to keep everything in top shape and leak-free.
