How to complete shower waterproofing?

when waterproofing and re-tilling a shower area, with no door, is it required to waterproof the entire bathroom area, original tiles will be left on bathroom area outside shower area and hybrid flooring planks fitted over existing tiles. shower area has been waterproofed and new tiles to the floor and walls. is a waterproofing certificate required to sell the house?.

The National Construction Code (NCC) and Australian Standard AS 3740:2021 govern waterproofing in wet areas, and in certain jurisdictions, it is a requirement that waterproofing work is carried out by a licensed water proofer.

Since your shower is open, it is considered an unenclosed shower, which often results in water spray reaching beyond the shower zone. In a setup like this, under section 10.2.18 of the National Construction Code (Part 10.2 Wet area waterproofing), it is recommended that the entire bathroom floor be waterproofed, or a vertical water stop be installed to contain the water. In your case, I would suggest checking the requirements of the hybrid flooring, as it is unlikely they will be usable in a direct wet area like a shower, so a water stop may need to be installed to delineate them from the tiled section.

While not always legally mandated, a waterproofing certificate is generally recommended when selling a home, especially if renovations have been done to wet areas. It provides proof of compliance with Australian Standards and can increase your property's value and buyer confidence. I would suggest you speak with your solicitor for their guidance on this.

Ultimately, there is a fair bit of complexity to this, so your best option is to speak with a licensed water proofer. They will be able to look at the area, assess the requirements based on the NCC and Australian Standards and make a recommendation. They will also be able to provide a waterproofing certificate.
