How to cover pebble detail in shower?

Hi all! I’m very new to diy but I’m hoping to find a way to cover this rock detail in my shower. It’s not directly under the water but does get wet from condensation etc. Ideally I’d like to cover it with some kind of putty and paint it white. It doesn’t sit exactly flush with the tiles (ie the rocks protrude a bit) but I’m ok with it not being completely flat. Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so what products I would need?

Thank you!

Re: How to cover pebble detail in shower

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @katie123. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about removing pebble accent tiles.

The most effective and long-lasting solution would be to remove the pebble feature and replace it with tiles that match or complement your existing shower. This way, you can create a neat, waterproof finish by tiling the strip and grouting it properly.

While it might seem easier to just fill and paint over the pebbles, unfortunately, there’s no filler or putty that will give you a durable, neat finish in a wet area like this. Because the pebbles stick out, you’d need a significant amount of filler to level the area, then sand it smooth — and even then, it may crack or peel over time with moisture exposure. Paint likely won’t hold up well either.

Since there is likely waterproofing behind the pebble tiles, I recommend enlisting the services of a tiler who can quickly remove the pebble section and install a clean strip of white tiles to match your vision.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Thank you @MitchellMc! That all makes sense - I thought that might be the case but was hopeful there might be an alternative. I appreciate your help!

Hi again @MitchellMc , do you think it would be possible to just paint over the pebbles? If so what paint would you recommend? Thank you again for your help!

Re: How to cover pebble detail in shower

Hello @katie123

I suggest having a look at the Rust-Oleum 946ml White Gloss Tub And Tile Refinishing Kit. It is a fast-drying solution and ensures professional results without the mess or cost of replacing fixtures. It's Ideal for indoor use and rejuvenates surfaces quickly, leaving a bright, porcelain-like finish that lasts. Please keep in mind that the Tub and Tile will not match your tiles colour even though they are both a white finish.

Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when using the refinishing kit. Please make sure to follow all the safety precautions printed at the back of the can.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
