How to fix Villaboard for cavity slider?

Hi, I am renovating our bathroom. We are going to have fully tiled walls. I have removed the old 1/3 tiled wall and it has removed some of the previous villa board lining. We have a cavity slider door going into the bathroom and I’m wondering how I can fix the new Villa board to the area where the cavity slider is, as there are no joists to attach to etc. I’m worried that just using adhesive won’t be strong enough to hold a fully tiled wall.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your bathroom wall.

Generally speaking, you could use Macsim 8G x 30mm Fibre Cement Screws Galvanised or Macsim 8G x 20mm Fibre Cement Screws Galvanised to anchor the villaboard further to the cavity frame. However, adding tiles to it will add extra weight to the cavity frame. This extra weight could cause bowing or twisting in the timber cavity framework. In this particular instance, I suggest engaging the services of a builder. They will be able to offer suggestions on how to reinforce the cavity frame so that it can handle the extra weight of the tiles.

Mmmm Having a think about this as I cant see anywhere easy to attach the new villaboard to other then those horoizontal supports and I agree with @EricL that the added weight could cause a bowing down the track of the framework for the cavity door.

When you remove the trim for the doorway itself you will expost the supporting post, thats a fixing point, the second stud would be 800mm ish to the left. With a few glue only spots along that 800mm I would think that it should be ok but I hesitate to say it will be ok. Are you doing the waterproofing and tiling yourself? If you are getting someone to do it they may have a better idea on how it is done tho I think it will be pretty much as is.

Thanks Dave. No we are getting a tiler to do it. I’m considering of replacing the cavity door with a hinged door and building the joist and noggins so we can do it properly.

Changing the cavity slider and turning it into a regular wall would be the best course of action, as it will solve all the mounting and weight problems we were discussing before. It will definitely simplify things and make the refurbishment fairly straight forward.

Hi @cpierce27 No problem at all to fix cement sheeting to your cavity slider frame. In fact I did the same to my own a couple of years back, when the ensuite didn't have a door at all. Your can also use Aquacheck plasterboard.

I used a combination of construction adhesive and screws every 200mm to fix to the 4 timber frame rails. I used self drilling metal screws at the ends only. Just make sure the screws don't protrude through the frame rails
