Hi all,
I’m dealing with a problem in my bathroom sink. The kinematic brass pop-up waste mechanism has broken off at the bottom, and now the threaded section is tightly stuck in place.
Here’s what’s going on:
The lower part of the mechanism snapped off.
The threaded section is still embedded and seems jammed—unable to unscrew by hand or with basic tools
Has anyone encountered a similar issue?
What’s the safest and most effective way to remove the stuck thread section without damaging the basin?
Any tips or tool recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
Hello @aegil
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your pop-up waste.
Just a friendly reminder that any plumbing work must be carried out by a licensed plumber for safety and compliance.
Are you referring to the Kinetic Brass Pop Up Waste Mechanism? If you are, and it has snapped off from the bottom section, I propose removing the plug and waste and accessing the broken piece from the bottom of the waste itself. I'm not sure if there is a tool that you can use to hold onto the broken piece from the top if there is nothing for the tool to hold onto.
Was it a clean break or were there tall pieces left attached to the pop-up post? Would it be possible for you to post a photo of the basin waste? This will give our members a better idea of its current state. It might be possible to use long nose pliers to hold onto the broken pieces and turn it and loosen it up.
If it proves to be too difficult to remove, I propose changing the plug and waste assembly with a new one.

Hi
as you can see the bottom of the mechanism is broken and stuck inside . very hard to move even with pliers
Hello @aegil
It does appear to be a very clean break. I suggest trying to use a large flat head screwdriver and wedging it into the hole to see if it will get stuck into the sides and allow you to unscrew the bottom piece out. Another option is to remove the old plug and waste and see if you can remove it when the waste is uninstalled. The last option is to replace the entire plug and waste assembly with a new push to open unit.
Let me call on our experienced members @MikeTNZ, @TedBear and @Noyade for their recommendations.
