We just found this damage after peeling back some peel and stick wallpaper off our downstairs toilet. Looks like the prior owner tore off the tiles on top of the sink and didn't bother to fix it. There also looks to be some cracking at the corner where the sink and the wall meet, behind the clear caulk.
From a rudimentary Google search I figure I could do the following:
1. Reseal the exposed plasterboard with primer
2. Remove the caulk around the sink
3. Apple drywall mud to refinish the area
4. Tile over everything, incl around the sink on all sides.
I had the following questions /concerns:
1. Do I need to think about waterproofing? Planning to use this room to teach my toddler how to wash her hands which can get messy.
2. Can I fix this wall without having to remove the sink from the wall? I know it is harder and an extra hassle but just want to know.
Thank you so much!!
Hello @krysl3n25
Before starting your tiling project, assess the area to ensure the right approach. Since the section is small and only exposed to minor splashes, the tiles alone will provide sufficient waterproof protection. Begin by cleaning the wall to remove dust, grease, or loose paint for better adhesion. Plan your layout by dry-laying the tiles to check spacing and cuts, then mark a level guideline for accuracy. Use Dunlop 310ml Tile-All Plus Premixed Tile Adhesive, applying it evenly with a notched trowel before pressing each tile firmly into place and inserting spacers for consistent joints. Allow the adhesive to cure as directed, remove spacers, apply grout, and wipe the surface clean for a smooth, durable, and water-resistant finish.
In regards to your second questions, yes, you can repair the wall without having to remove the basin.
