How to fix existing paint peeling after using spray can to touch up?

 Hi

I recently had my bathroom door knobs changed which caused damage to the doors. I filled with builders bog, sanded & then waited to paint that part.
I purchased Color Lab Enamel white gloss paint & sprayed. The paint adhered ok to the parts having the filler but I got a shock that when the spray went onto the existing finish it caused the old paint to peel off like a skin!! Something in the spray can has reacted with the old finish which was in excellent condition causing it to peel.
Please advise me on how to fix this problem? I don’t want to sand down the whole door, so how do I prevent the peeling & painting the damaged part again ?

ThankyouThe pink is the builders bog where the spray paint has adhered well but the wood part is where the excess spray paint fell & started peeling off the old finish. The pink is the builders bog where the spray paint has adhered well but the wood part is where the excess spray paint fell & started peeling off the old finish.IMG_5048.jpegIMG_5051.jpegIMG_5049.jpegIMG_5048.jpegIMG_5047.jpegIMG_5050.jpeg

Re: Existing Paint peeling after using spray can to touch up

Hi @Delna,

Personally, I would sand those areas with 180/240-grit to remove any loose paint and to scuff up the surface. You should then scuff up the whole face of the door with 240-grit. Apply Dulux Max Adhesion to the whole door and then, when dry, paint with Aquanamel. You could try to patch and repair this section using the above products, but I suspect the result will be fairly noticeable.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you, do these come in small sizes ? Also would you know why this happened?

The smallest size tins for those products would be 1 litre for the Max Adhesion, but the Aquanamel paint is available in 500ml @Delna

It was likely the solvents included in the spray can that softened the paint on the door, causing it to delaminate.
