Hi everyone,
I’m hoping to get some advice on a shower maintenance issue.
My bathroom is around 25–30 years old and I believe it’s still in its original condition.
Recently I noticed a gap between the floor tile and the wall tile in the shower, and water seems to get trapped in there instead of evaporating. As a result, mould has started to grow. Here’s a photo of the gap:
From what I understand, the wall–floor junction should normally be filled. It looks like whatever was there before has deteriorated over time and disappeared.
Before this gets worse or leads to bigger waterproofing issues, I’d like to clean it up and reseal the joint. Could you please confirm whether this is a DIY-friendly job, and what are the steps and what product should I use?
Hello @Vincero1
If there is no evidence of outside leaks around the shower, behind the wall or other parts in the vicinity of the shower, then I recommend cleaning the surface of the tiles with Selleys 750ml Rapid Mould Killer Remover and a bristle brush. Once the tiles are totally clean allow the surface to totally dry up and making sure that there is no water trapped in the gap. Use a dry rag to remove all the water in that gap. It must be totally dry as well before you apply a sealer. I suggest using Selleys 300g White Wet Area Waterproof Silicone Sealant, it is also available in clear.
Here is a handy step-by-step guide: How To Silicone Seal A Bath (some of the techniques used are applicable to your project)
Please remember to wear personal protection such as safety goggles and gloves when working on your project.
