How to fix laundry tap that fell off?

One of my laundry taps fell off, exposing the spindle (I think that's what it is). I think the inner spring is broken so I'd like to replace both outer taps. Can I just put tap exteriors on the existing spindles, or would I need to remove the spindles all together and replace the entire mechanism?

Looking at the picture you posted, it appears that the thread on spindle is still in good condition and its possible that the nut for the handle itself has worn out. You can replace the cover flange and handle with a similar looking set such as the Shaw & Mason Chrome Zinc Die Cast Handles - Pair in combination with Shaw & Mason Chrome Plastic Wall Flange - Pair. You also have the option of getting a different handle such as the Shaw & Mason Chrome Plated Four Point Tap Handles - Pair. I propose visiting your local store and see which cover and handle calls out to you.
