My toilet is slowly leaking water into the toilet bowl
, can I repair it myself? Where do I begin
If the inlet valve is closed and it is the seal on the bottom of flush tank that needs replaced. If it stops then it is the inlet valve that doesn’t stop once the tank is full.
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Caroline8. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about fixing a leaking toilet.
The best place to start would be with this helpful guide: How to fix a leaking toilet. It will help you determine whether the inlet valve or the flush valve is causing the issue. Once you know, you'll be able to replace the sealing washers.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Mitchell, I turned off the tap after the cistern was full and the next day the cistern was almost empty of water. I guess that points to a leaking flush valve.
How may I replace that? I looked it up on the internet but none that tells me how to remove the flotation gadget before removing the flush system to get to the valve. I have 0 experience with anything like this. Is it reasonably easy to replace the valve and are there any tips? I am concerned that I will wreck the whole thing
Hello @Caroline8
If you are keen to tackle this project the float arm of the filling valve must be removed. If you look closely at the filling valve the float arm is held in place with a brass pin. In this case the brass will now be tarnished and black or dark in colour. Simply turn it loose and pull it out. This will allow you to pull the brass pin out. The arm can now come out, just put it aside for the meantime. The flushing mechanism is held in place by two pins at the front. That would be the pink coloured plastic, you'll need to pull the plastic back while pulling the entire flushing mechanism upwards and out.
Once you get the flushing mechanism out, I suggest replacing the seating washer with the Kinetic Seating Washers (the red one). In my experience the red one has the highest rate of compatibility with the old Caroma set. Otherwise, if it proves to be too difficult, I suggest engaging the services of a handy person or a plumber.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
