How to fix leaking shower base?

 Good afternoon team,

So my amazing house, I've had some water damage and needed to remove some of the plaster to remove what I assume was black mould. Question for you the shower base has a lip that runs the whole way around, I think this is where the water has seeped in. Do I just silicone at the walls between the lip and shower screen to stop the water running around all four sides of shower base?

Any help would be amazing 😊

Re: shower base

Hi @Grant-noclue,

Sealing any visible gaps on the inside of the shower tray—particularly where the base meets the wall or the shower screen—would definitely be a good first step to help stop water from escaping. Use a high-quality, mould-resistant silicone sealant and ensure the area is dry and clean before application.

That said, if your shower base is a prefabricated unit, like acrylic or fibreglass, it’s designed much like a bowl where all water should be directed down the drain. The lip you're referring to typically sits behind the wall sheeting or tiles, acting as a barrier to prevent water from escaping behind the wall. If water has managed to get past that, it could point to a more significant issue with either the waterproofing or another leak elsewhere.

Unfortunately, from your photos and description, it looks like a considerable amount of water has penetrated behind the wall. Water can travel quite a distance from the original leak point, so it’s possible it’s coming from a leaking tap or pipe in the wall rather than from the tray itself. You might want to open up more of the plasterboard to properly inspect the full extent of the damage. If you find the issue is extensive or you’re unsure of the source, it would be worth calling in a leak detection specialist—they have tools to pinpoint exactly where the water is coming from without unnecessary demolition.

It’s great that you’re tackling the mould early—identifying the leak source is the key to making sure it doesn’t return.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
