How to fix loose toilet seat?

My toilet seat tends to slide sideways when someone is on it. Probably need to tighten the screws/bolts. But this seat has a different set-up to others I've seen. Usually, there's two covers on the top rear that can be lifted to access the screws. This one has one long piece of plastic which doesn't seem possible to lift. How do I access the screws?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Richardnq. It's a pleasure to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about tightening a toilet seat.

There are a multitude of different methods for attaching toilet seats, and unfortunately, they can vary greatly between brands. If you can lift both lids and take a photo from the front of the hinge, that might give us a better idea of the setup.

It’s possible that your seat pulls straight forward and off the mounting plate. Sometimes the long cover will pop up, other times it will slide off instead. There might also be locking tabs at the back or at the sides that need to be released before the cover and seat can slide off to reveal the screws or bolts.

Once you gain access, simply tighten the bolts or screws using a screwdriver or adjustable spanner, making sure they’re snug but not overtightened to avoid damaging the fittings or porcelain.

If you check the back of the cover plate, is it open @Richardnq? If so, I would suggest that the gap allows the seat and cover plate to slide forward and off the mount. With the seat in the upright position, grip it low down on either side at the corners and pull it straight towards the front of the bowl. It might take some force to release it.

Hi again - yes that's the way to get the seat off. But there's no access to the screws from on top. I had to undo the plastic bolts from underneath. The plastic brackets the seat slides on to are both broken, so the seat is able to get free of either of them.
I tried cleaning them and reassembling, but the seat still moves and slides and the brackets come loose from the toilet surface.

I'll be buying a new seat in the morning. Thanks for your help

If the brackets are broken, I suggest bringing your seat to the store and comparing it to the Estilo White Soft Close Adjustable Link Suite Toilet Seat or the Stylus Tasman MK ll Wide Toilet Seat as they look very similar to your toilet seat. Your goal is to look for a toilet seat that is similar in size and shape with easy to use plastic bolts that can be tightened from the bottom of the toilet pan. The less complicated the fittings area the easier the seat can be installed.

Thank you Jason. New seat installed now. It's an awkward job for a tall bloke to get down alongside the toilet to put all the fittings in place. Done now. Thanks for your help
