How to fix loose wall plugs?

Hi there, I'm struggling with what was supposed to be a simple diy job - installing this towel rail.

However when I installed the included wall plugs, I drilled the holes slightly too big and the screws and wall plugs did not have enough grip.

I then went back to Bunnings and purchased larger wall plugs - WallMate screw in anchors - and this time screwed them in manually with a screwdriver. While the wall plugs went in flush and tight, screwing in the provided screws into the plugs eventually loosened the plugs again - they lost grip and started to spin, so the screws lost their bite. I now have three larger holes in the wall and am at a loss of what to do - the drywall seems incredibly weak and unfriendly to typical wall plugs.

I'm planning to go back to Bunnings to try a set of butterfly anchors as my last resort, but I'm unsure of whether the larger screws will fit the mounting plate of the towel holder. Posting this here as a last ditch effort to hear from anyone else before I head back to the store tomorrow.

Here's a photo of the larger failed wall mates I purchased, along with my three failures. Would really appreciate any help here!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your wall plugs.

I propose repairing those three holes you've drilled in the wall with Selleys Gap Filler 435g Spakfilla Heavy Duty Interior And Exterior. I suggest moving the towel rail a bit to the left, if possible, in order to to drill new holes. I recommend using Ramset 6 x 38mm Universal Anchor - 6 Pack, these are easy to use and do not require very large holes to anchor into plasterboard. My best advice is to triple check the size of the drill bit you'll need to make the pilot holes in the wall. I also suggest using only a hand screwdriver to turn the screw into the wall plug.

Thanks @EricL for the quick response - would it be possible to keep the existing holes and use a hollow wall anchor instead? Something like this?

Alternatively, I had these in mind and would purchase extra washers to cover the holes. Ideally I'd like to avoid repatching the wall and making new holes if possible. Cheers mate.

Yes, you can give the Ramset 1 / 8" x 50mm Round Head Toggle Spring - 4 Pack a go on the existing holes that you have. Make sure to follow the installation instructions at the back of the packaging.
