Hi all, we have a dripping shower that is getting worse. Have been quoted $1000+ to fix, primarily because of challenges removing/accessing the taps. We’re planning a new bathroom so the money seems like a waste.
We have managed to more recently replace the shower head.
Just wondering if there’s a short term fix possible putting an additional valve between the shower head fixture and the wall outlet, or between the shower head ball socket on the shower head arm (which appears to be removable), so that we can at least stop it dripping while not in use? Any suggestions much appreciated!
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @jam2345. It's amazing to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about fixing leaking taps.
I can't imagine why there would be an issue replacing the valves in your taps. I'd suggest you get a couple of other quotes. Unless there is something very peculiar going on with the taps (can't think of what that might be), this is just a relatively simple process of changing the valves.
You could even do this job yourself. The cone-shaped cover flanges can be a bit of a pain, but there's nothing different about your taps compared to any other. A plumber should be able to simply and easily fix the issue. Here's a helpful guide: How to replace a tap washer.
Even if the cone cover flanges are difficult to remove, you can simply destructively remove them with multi-grip pliers and then install a new budget tap set such as the Estilo Chrome Wall Top Assembly Set. For that price, they'll even come with the new washers.
For someone relatively handy, this should only take an hour or two at the cost of a new tap set or washers.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
