How to install bathroom vanity in tight space?

IMG_9474.jpeg

Hi team

currently have a very impractical bathroom vanity, because the cupboard space and drawers are too small to actually put much in unless all I want to store is one toothbrush and one pair of tweezers…

I am wanting to replace this silly vanity with something that can be used to store at least a few more items so as to avoid clutter in the room.

It is an apartment so there’s no option to move anything.

The existing vanity is the type which has a cupboard on one side and 3 (too small to be useful) drawers on the other side.
It has a semi recessed basin.

The existing vanity is 750mm wide.

The waste is on the floor in the middle of the vanity, hence the vanity is floor mounted.  The taps are on the basin (not wall taps).

The vanity sits between a service column on the left (which obviously cannot be moved) and the bath on the right. The vanity sits right up against the service column. There’s a space of 150mm between the vanity and the bath.

the space from the service column to the bath is 900mm and the existing (useless) vanity is 750mm wide.

Is there likely to be any issues with putting a 900mm vanity in this space (since it measures 900mm), and having the vanity sitting right up against the bath? Will this be likely to cause issues becasue of the location of the waste, for example, or other issues that may arise from having the vanity touching the bath?

It is a regular bath, not freestanding.
Im not there at this exact moment so I don’t have a photo but this is a not to scale picture of the layout.

Re: installing bathroom vanity in tight space

Hello @karinas

My only worry in installing a vanity right next to the bath is accidental splashing of water when the bath is being used. Do a lot of family members use the bath? If yes, then there will be a higher rate of water getting splashed about and hitting the vanity. Now the vanity is technically moisture resistant but if it is constantly drenched in water it will eventually have an effect on its structure. But other than that, I don't see any other major issue with installation. The plumber can re-route the vanity waste so that it is in line with the new basin.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Hi @karinas

I see no issue with the vanity being next to bath or touching. It's quite a common design especially in older homes when bathrooms even in larger homes were very small. My parent's 1960's home is a classic example of this. The main and only bathroom was 2m x 3m with bath, shower and vanity!

Re: installing bathroom vanity in tight space

Good Morning @karinas

I dont see any issues either, Do your taps/water outlet come from the existing cabinet or off the wall? Thats about the only thing I can think of that would maybe cause an issue if the sink bowl is off center.

As to extra storage in the room, If you have a troll through Ikea they have a thin hinged open cupboard with pull down doors (for shoes) but could be reused for towels ect next to the toilet against the wall. Shoe cabinets will show a range.

Re: installing bathroom vanity in tight space

Hi Eric,

Thankyou - the bath isn’t used that much. Just by one of my kids every now and then but there isn’t usually too much splashage, so hopefully this wouldn’t cause damage

Re: installing bathroom vanity in tight space

Hi Dave

thabkyou - they’re not wall taps. They just have the outlet in the wall with hoses connected to a mixer tap in the basin.
great idea about using the shoe cabinets to store towels - I know the cabinets you’re talking about and I think they would work
