How to investigate water damage?

Hello Bunnings community 👋

The plaster on the right side of my shower is deteriorating. It looks like there might be a water leak from the shower somewhere and the plaster is feeling a tad soft on pressing. The caulking is intact. The condition of the left side has been like that for 3-4 years since I moved in with no change. Is it best for me to call in a plumber or is there some DIY I can do in the meantime to investigate or fix it? Thanks for your time and help as always!

Re: Water damage?

Hi @phiaxs,

Based on the description that it feels soft to the touch, the general appearance and the rust poking through, then I'd say it's pretty likely there is a leak.

Unfortunately, if there is a leak from the shower into the adjoining wall, this means the waterproofing membrane has been damaged and will require rectification.

At this point, I would suggest you contact someone who specialises in leak detection. They should be able to identify the source of the leak and recommend steps moving forward.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
