Hi team,
I’ve read a bunch of posts about similar queries but I still don’t know what product to use.
We took tiles off in laundry and a section 400x1900 has gone back to exposed concrete render?(over the brick). We will be re tiling but want to know what the best product to use is to level out the section in prep for re tiling. The thickness is 2-3mm only that will level to the wall either side.
Best process/product(s) suggestions please. Anything pre mix given it’s so small? Any help or advice is appreciated.
My online reading had me thinking hardwall plater, the building supply fella told me concrete/red sand/lime mix, husband says just go with cornice cement….. thanks in advance
Lauren
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @laurenDC. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repairing a wall.
The simplest option to consider first is whether it would be easier to sheet that section with Villaboard, because that instantly gives you a flat, stable surface to tile over and often saves a lot of fiddly patching. You may still need to skim a little to straighten the base before fixing the sheet, but it generally produces a much cleaner result.
If you want to repair the exposed render instead, the builder’s suggestion of using a proper render mix is sound, because it is designed for that kind of substrate. However, it's not ideal for thin coats, such as those measuring 2-3mm. I would avoid cornice cement because it is not intended to be used as a wall levelling product and will not behave the same way once tiled over. Since you are only filling two to three millimetres and prefer something easy, a premixed or rapid-set patching compound is a good match. Ardit Rapid Set Repair Mortar is a reliable option for this sort of repair, and you can apply it with a plasterer’s trowel, smooth it off, and let it cure fully before tiling.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
