How to patch and paint bathroom wall?

Hello,

I'm after some advice on the best way to finish off my bathroom renovation. My plan is to patch and paint this Gyprock wall, but with the amount of cut outs (from electrical works) and various chips, scuffs and screws, I'm just wondering what the best way forward is.

Could I get away with simply using gap filler and then priming, sealing and painting?

Any help or guidance appreciated!

Re: Patching / Painting Wall in Bathroom

Afternoon @tiramisusan

Welcome to the Bunnings community pages

You have landed in a good spot asking those questions, I will tag @Nailbag and @JacobZ in for their opinions as well.

I have just finished patching some holes that turned out rather largish and also some long vertical and horizontal cracks in my walls. I used plaster and patches to repair and then sand. Im not sure what product you are asking about when you say "caulking"

I used UNi-PRO 500g Multi Purpose Interior Filler - 500g (Tho would have sworn it was 1Kilos worth lol will check when I go home)

I patched like you have and did two coats over some areas. So my vote is plastering

Will wait for others and see what they suggest.

Hello @tiramisusan

Allow me to welcome you as well to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about patching your Gyprock wall.

For small to medium sized joins, I suggest using Gyprock CSR 2.25kg Less Mess Multi-Purpose Joint Compound in combination with Gyprock CSR 75m Plasterboard Perforated Paper Jointing Tape. My best advice would be to make sure that the joins are clean and free of debris. The general steps would be to apply the joint compound and place the tape over the joint and then applying more joint compound over the tape surface.

Here are some handy step-by-step guides:

Re: How to patch and paint bathroom wall?

Hi @tiramisusan

The correct steps is essentially as @EricL outlined.

  • First run a sharp Stanley blade on a slight angle along each side of the join/patch. Essentially you are creating a "V" but at the same time removing any frayed plasterboard paper.
  • Then apply a thin coating of Gyprock CSR 2.25kg Less Mess Multi-Purpose Joint Compound.
  • Cut to length without overlapping the Gyprock CSR 75m Plasterboard Perforated Paper Jointing Tape. and press that in with your spatula. Now apply another coat about 20mm wider over the tape. Don't worry that it covers all of the patch and don't try to make the surface finish quality. Just don't apply it too thick.
  • Sand off the high-points and smooth out the edges. The apply a wider coating of topping compound which will take longer to dry. Again sand off once dry.
  • Now apply a final wider coat and sand to a smooth finish feathering off the edges so you can't feel any ridges etc.
  • Roll on a primer/undercoat and then 2-3 coats of final colour paint.
