How to prepare shower base for retiling?

I’m wanting to retile an existing concrete shower base. I’ve removed the tiles and I’m in the process of trying to remove as much of the old adhesive as possible. The base seems to be sound, no cracks etc.

my plan after removing the old adhesive is to waterproof the base along with the walls before retiling. The main questions are around what do I do with the existing waste? How do I remove it? Should I remove it? What’s the best approach?

I’m trying to avoid having to remove the whole shower base and put in a new one, but advice eagerly accepted!

Thanks in advance!

Re: How to prep shower base for retiling

Hello @Rimmalicious

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your shower base.

I recommend engaging a licensed plumber to remove the existing shower waste, as this component must be integrated into the waterproofing system. It’s important to note that waterproofing must be completed by a trained and registered professional, as it requires inspection and certification.

Additionally, I suggest taking some time to consider the overall assembly of your shower, particularly in relation to achieving the correct fall. It would be beneficial to consult with your plumber to ensure the installation complies with applicable building codes and standards.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
