How to protect timber benchtops in bathroom?

I have timber bench-tops in my bathrooms and they are starting to go a bity mouldy. I'd like to sand them off and then cover them with something waterproof. I was thinking of Laminex but happy to hear any other suggestions.

Whatever you suggest, can you let me know what equipment and materials I would need?

Thanks

Re: How to protect timber benchtops in bathroom?

Hello @RichMist

Thanks for sharing your question about the timber benchtops in your bathroom. It is possible to cover the benchtop, but I would like to propose using Cabot's 1L Satin Clear Benchtop Timber Finish to seal your benchtop. I've used the same sealer in my own home, and it has held up very well.

I suggest investing in a detail sander and starting with 180grit sandpaper and finishing off with a 240grit sandpaper. You'll also need sugar soap wipes and a good brush.

Here is a handy guide that will help:  How To Restore Furniture

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

Re: How to protect timber benchtops in bathroom?

Good afternoon @RichMist

I was wondetring if you could supply some photos fo the benchtop as I have a few ideas that may be suitable.

Depending on how your timber looks and how smooth it is, @EricL 's suggestion would work well. I like timber oil on timber but havnt tried it in a bathroom enviroment.

If you want to cover the bench top, and the timber has a decent look then how about saftey glass of some kind? Perspex could be used but think it would mark easily.

If we see what and how the sink is sitting on the bench plus an overall photo there may be some ideas we could suggest.

Hi @RichMist

I would follow @EricL recommendations on the preparation steps. Though I think he's accidentally linked the wrong coating as that one is for wooden preparation tops such as used in kitchens. It's a great product just not as durable as this one.
