How to protect toilet bowl?

Hi there,

I guess the subject line summarises my question as politely as I can put it. I recently read a NYT article about exactly this issue and they seem to have found a wonder product which seals the porcelain surface of toilet bowls so that nothing will stick to it.

I have been trying to get some of this product shipped to Australia via different means for a couple of weeks now, but it seems it is simply not possible to get it here wihtout engaging the services of a US resident and paying a couple of hundred AUD extra for their time and postage. Is there a similar product that Bunnings stock?

I note that the Peerless JAL 750ml Clean And Bead Bathroom Cleaner & Water Repellant (I/N 0345013) purports to have a similar effect, but it is not marketed specificly for toilet bowls (ie resistant to a much higher voume of water than a shower screen - over a few hundred flushes a month) and as the author of the New York Times article notes, the chemicals used are meant to be a quantum leap behind what the makers of the SpotLESS toilet coating have come up with ("Liquid Entrenched Smooth Surface (LESS), is different in that it applies a layer of tiny silicone fibers, which themselves are coated in a slick silicone lubricant").

Could Bunnings please look to stock this US product? Or a similar product using the same (new) chemicals?

Strange question I know! But I appreciate your advice and thank you in advance. Cheers

Re: How to protect toilet bowl from sk!d m#rks?

Hello again,

Just as a follow up to my question above, various sources online have suggested that car polish wax has a similar effect if the toilet is drained of water and allowed to dry and the wax is applied as one would for a car, then allowed to dry to form a protective coating for the porcelain surface. I doubt this is an environmentally friendly way to deal with the problem but I tried it anyway and it doesn't work for more than a couple of days. I am pretty sure other people will have a similar problem as we are now required to install toilets without enough water flow or pressure to clean the bowl and it is an unfornate situation for guests to find themselves in, even after they have audibly flushed three or four times and emerge with an embarassed look on their faces.

Thanks again.

Re: How to protect toilet bowl?

Hi @lucaswelby,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

Unfortunately, I can't see any similar products that are available in our part of the world.

As you've seen, the Peerless JAL 750ml Clean And Bead Bathroom Cleaner And Water Repellant appears to be the closest in function.

It certainly seems like an interesting product, which I can pass on to the relevant teams for their investigation.

Thank you for sharing.

Jacob
