How to redesign laundry and add a benchtop?

Hi Wonderful people,

I am looking to bring life to my laundry. It has a sink already there with white laminate surrounding it. I am thinking of adding a benchtop to span rest of the space. I would prefer to leave two spaces beneath it for washing machine and dryer. How do I add supports if I put laminate benchtop? Do I need to build up a wooden frame support on to the walls and then add brackets ( roughly drawn in the third photo) ?

what is the recommended spacing for supports ? Is it realistic to get it done under $200?

Thanks for sharing your question about your laundry update. It is possible to attach a benchtop or timber panel to that area of your laundry. I propose a combination of angle brackets and timber support should be enough to make your benchtop safe. I recommend looking at the Specrite 2200 x 600 x 26mm Timber Multi Use Pine Panel in combination with Carinya 250 x 200mm White Angle Bracket. As for the timber piece, I suggest using 70 x 35mm Framing MGP10 Untreated Pine 2.4m for the timber support at the back.

The general steps will be to locate the studs in the wall and use these as anchor points for the timber and angle brackets. I suggest using a level to make sure that the support pieces are straight and level to your existing tub. There should be enough room for a dryer under the benchtop. My best advice is to double check the measurements before you start buying materials.

I also suggest sealing the pine panel with Cabot's 500ml Satin Water Based Cabothane Clear Polyurethane Timber Varnish or your preferred choice of sealer.

Hi Eric,

Thank you for getting back to me. Would I need to add any legs for support ? How would I attach it to the timber back frame? Also what is the main purpose behind the timber support if brackets are used to hold the benchtop ? Apologies for the questions as I am a complete newbie.

There is no need to add legs to the fixing method I suggested. The angle brackets serve as the legs for the benchtop. The timber support is there to support the back area of the benchtop should you happen to put something heavy on it. Please allow me some time to draw up a sample image for you. As soon as it is finished, I'll post it here.
