How to regrout a shower wall?

I’m in the process of regrouting an old shower. The grout was very bad on the floor but I’ve just redone that. I’m in the process of doing the splash wall opposite the shower head and noticed there are gaps between the tiles and the wall it should be stuck to? I’m worried about water damage if I continue. Is this something I should get a professional to address?

Re: Questions regarding shower wall grouting

Hello @nelshunter

Does water flow out of the grout? If nothing flows out of the grout odds are it is still in sound condition and it just needs to be re-grouted properly and not finished off too deeply. This is so that you'll have a thick layer of grout that won't get eroded straight away as soon as the shower spray hits it. However, if water is coming out and the tiles are loose, I suggest engaging the services of a professional to assess and diagnose your tiled shower wall.

Re: Questions regarding shower wall grouting

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the reply. I have a few questions. You mentioned making sure it’s a thick layer of grout between the tiles but you also mentioned not going too deep?

There hasn’t been any signs of water leaking or loose tiles. I’ve also inspected the floor under the bathroom and no signs of water leaking at all there either. I just wasn’t sure if water would be getting trapped behind the tiles but I guess the water proofing is still intact under it?

Re: Questions regarding shower wall grouting

Hello @nelshunter

Yes, that is correct, if the tiles are still solidly placed and there is no movement there is a very good chance that water has not entered the back of the tiles. My best advice is to apply Crommelin 500ml Shower Sealer And Waterproofer after regrouting your shower area. Make sure to give your grout enough time to cure before applying the sealer.
