How to remove bathroom floor screed?

Good morning,

I have removed the bathroom floor tiles and most of the screed with a demolition hammer. However I am struggling to remove the residual screed without making dents in the underlying slab. Would it be possible to remove it with some kind of concrete grinder?

Hi @AnnaH1,

Yes, you can remove the residual screed using an angle grinder fitted with a diamond cup wheel. This tool is highly effective for grinding down screed and will leave you with a relatively smooth surface. If you're planning to re-tile the area, keep in mind that the tile adhesive will fill in minor voids, so while the surface needs to be level, it doesn’t need to be perfectly smooth.

When using a concrete grinder, ensure you’re wearing appropriate PPE, including a respirator to protect against fine dust, safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves. Wear tight-fitting clothing and tie any long hair back. Also, consider using a dust extraction system or working in a well-ventilated area to minimise mess and health risks. If you're not experienced using an angle grinder then I would suggest reaching out to anyone that might be and having them run you through using one.
