How to remove grout haze?

Hi guys,

Does anyone have any advice on which product to use to remove grout haze? The white grouting was also done by the previous owner, and I would like to remove it, is there a way to easily dissolve it? I would prefer that rather than using a grout saw as I am worried about damaging the waterproofing.

Hi @Mary7,

Your dark tiles have water stains on them, which is a buildup of minerals in the water. When the water evaporates off the tiles, it leaves these mineral deposits behind. Unfortunately, grey and darker tiles are particularly susceptible to this. There are no specific products I am aware of designed for removing these stains, so you might like to have them professionally cleaned, and then you could coat the surface with tile sealant to help prevent their recurrence.

I can also see the issue with the grout, and I'm not entirely sure what's going on there. I would hazard a guess that the original grout on the floor is black, matching the walls. At some point, they painted it with white grout paint. The coating has deteriorated and is lifting, revealing the dark grout underneath. Reapplying the grout paint would be the easiest fix here.

You are right, the original grout on the floor was dark grey and was painted over with white. If I want to bring it back to grey does the white grouting need to be removed first or can I just paint over the top?

The black grouting on the wall is not original, it was actually white and they painted over it as well.

I'd give the grout/paint a good scrub and try to remove as much of the white paint as possible, @Mary7, certainly any that is loose. You could then paint over it with the Black grout paint. I don't like your luck in trying to remove all the white paint and restore it to the original black. The white paint would have made its way into the pores of the black grout and will be next to impossible to remove.
