How to remove shower recess tap?

Hi,

I am trying to find out what size spanner I need to undo a shower recess tap and replace the washer/valve. I have successfully changed this on one of two taps. I managed to undo the first one with no trouble and change the washer. However, none of my fixed size spanners are big enough. I only have a shifter that extends to the right size. The other tap is on really tight and in an awkward position and I can't get the shifter tight enough. It keeps slipping and I don't want to burr the connection. If anyone can advise on what size spanner I need to undo the tap. Is there a standard size? Any help greatly appreciated.

In most cases, a tap spanner is the ideal tool for removing a tap spindle. Tap spanner sets come in various sizes to fit the different nuts commonly found on tap spindles. Unfortunately, because there are several sizes of nuts on tap spindles, it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact size you would need without seeing the tap in question.

Given that your fixed-size spanners aren’t quite fitting, and the adjustable shifter isn’t gripping properly, I would recommend looking at a tap spanner set as it will provide you with a range of sizes to ensure a perfect fit for your tap.

Hi Mitchell,

Thank you for the advice. There is just one problem. The tap spanners all look like they fit over the tap spindle. This wouldn't work with these taps as I can't see a way to take the handles off. I have attached a photo.

Your tap has a hidden brass screw behind the handle itself. I suggest having a quick look at these discussions - How do I remove theses tap handles? by @LisaD and How to remove leaking laundry tap handle? by @ennoh. They give a very good explanation of how the handles are attached to the tap spindles. Once you have the handle removed the flange can be removed by turning it anticlockwise and from there you can use a tap spanner to remove the spindle.
