How to replace a sink waste?

I am replacing the 30mm bathroom sink waste however the basin sits on a 40mm think benchtop. Hence the nut holding the waste in is well recessed 40 to 50mm in a hole in the benchtop. And the hole is not much bigger than the nut. Any idea on how to reach the nut to undo, are there long tube spanners to reach that far and that big? Or is there an extension nut that is long enough and can be screwed in?

Photo shows the silver tube goes up and there is a lock nut on the end. I may be able to just unscrew the silver tube although not sure how it is connected to the waste. And not sure it will fit the new waste. In case someone has come across it before I dismantle the waste and pipes.

Looking at the photo you posted, I suspect that you have a raised basin assembly. In these situations, the plumber will often install the waste on the basin first and then silicone seal the basin to the benchtop. The plumber will then continue the installation as normal at the bottom.

You are correct in saying that there are no tools that will allow you to reach inside the bottom of the basin as there is very little space. In fact, there is just enough space to fit the waste bottom and link it to the waste pipe.

Generally speaking, the basin must be removed from the benchtop which will then allow you to remove the old waste. Once you've replaced the waste the basin can then be cleaned off and silicone sealed back to the benchtop.

It is an exacting process and great care must be taken when removing the silicone to prevent scratching the benchtop. I propose using Silicone Remover in combination with a Craftright 18mm Snap Off Knife.
